Unable to take advantage of the Rockies’ recent slide, the Brewers remain on the outside looking in at the NL playoffs and are underdogs on the MLB odds again in Friday’s clash with the Cubs.

CH Cubs vs Milwaukee Brewers

On the surface, it appears neither the Milwaukee Brewers nor Colorado Rockies are interested in the second NL Wild Card. The Brewers missed a golden opportunity last night to catch the Rockies for a postseason ticket, as well as close in on the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central race, and Milwaukee is once again the home underdog Friday when the division rivals meet again. John Lackey (11-11, 4.62) pitches for Chicago as -115 chalk, Brandon Woodruff (2-2, 3.28) goes for the Brewers and 9 is the total.

The Brewers lost a 9th-inning lead on Thursday before Kris Bryant hit the game-winning homer in the 10th to give the Cubs a 5-3 win. BetOnline closed Chicago -135 for that tilt, and the result evened the season series at eight wins apiece. Visitors have ruled the rivalry this year, the Cubs now 5-2 at Miller Park.

Brew Crew Winless In Woodruff’s 3 Home Starts

Lackey has had a full week off since his last appearance and excited that contest against the Cardinals early after taking exception to Jordan Baker's strike zone. The Cubs still won the game courtesy of a big sixth inning, their 10th victory in Lackey’s last dozen starts. The veteran has experienced a little tough luck against the Brewers this season, losing twice in Chicago and winning here in July with a 3.79 overall ERA in those outings.

Making just his seventh big league start, and first, against the Cubs, Woodruff has been a welcome addition to Craig Counsel’s rotation. Only one of his six previous assignments was ugly, a 5-IP, 6 ER battering at the hands of the Pirates 11 days ago. He rebounded with a solid performance last weekend in Miami, going a full seven frames and allowing three runs to grab the cheddar as -141 chalk on the MLB odds. The former Mississippi State standout is still looking for his first dubya in front of the home fans, the Brewers 0-3 when he tosses in Milwaukee but a perfect 3-0 on the road.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Now finishing his second full season umping in the big leagues, Carlos Torrez hasn’t demonstrated any distinct tendencies this year with totals in his plate assignments sitting 12-14 O/U and home teams 14-12. He’s been working in chief Dana DeMuth’s crew all season, and they all worked with the lid off at Miller Park last night, and they should again tonight under clear skies in Milwaukee with temps in the low-80s for the first pitch.

The pressure is on the Brewers who can kiss any thoughts of a division title goodbye with a setback this evening. It’s a pretty easy call to follow Chicago with my free baseball pick.
