The Giants look to be turning things around after a very rough start, and we have a free MLB pick for their Monday night contest in San Francisco against the LA Dodgers.

Best LWe got through the hoopla surrounding Derek Jeter's number being retired, and now we're ready to settle down for the seventh week of the long MLB season. Helping us return to actual baseball is the start of a series in San Francisco between the Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Unfortunately, a decision by Los Angeles to shuffle its rotation kept top sports books from releasing lines for overnight wagering. Once they do come out, we expect the Giants to be favored with Matt Cain on the hill. He'll face the well-traveled and oft-injured Brandon McCarthy who is returning from the disabled list due to a left shoulder separation.

It has been a disastrous season do far for San Fran, but the Giants are showing signs of righting the ship as they head into this series on a 3-game win streak, their longest of 2017. Those wins helped Bruce Bochy's club escape the cellar in the NL West where Colorado leads LA by 1.5 games after those two squads split a 4-game series in Denver over the weekend.

Can Utley Continue Past Success Vs. Cain?

McCarthy enjoyed a solid April before suffering his latest in a long line of injuries. Los Angeles won four of his five starts while he pitched to a 3.10 ERA, punching out 25 batters in 29 frames. Tonight is his first go of this season against the Giants since he was with the Diamondbacks in 2014, and first at AT&T Park since 2013. McCarthy hurled six shutout innings in that assignment but has not always fared well against San Francisco. Two batters who have given him trouble are Brandon Crawford (6-12) and Hunter Pence (8-19, HR).

Cain had the one blow up in Cincinnati two starts ago as a slight underdog on the MLB odds, chased in the fourth with nine runs; aside from that, the veteran owns a 2.50 ERA against the rest of the league. He has been especially tough at pitcher-friendly AT&T, winning two of his starts with a 1.13 ERA. One of those wins came against the Dodgers three weeks ago, Cain tossing six scoreless innings. Dodgers infielder Chase Utley has enjoyed facing Cain in the past, collecting 11 hits in 30 at bats with four of those knocks leaving the yard.

Series Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The 3rd-most played rivalry in the National League, tonight also marks the third meeting this season between the Dodgers and Giants. They split four in San Francisco back in late-April, totals running 1-3 O/U in that series, then the Giants took two of three in Los Angeles to begin May, the 'over' cashing twice there. The Giants are 84-75 vs. LA at AT&T Park since it opened in Y2K, and have won seven of the last nine on this diamond.

A strong WNW wind (out to right-center) is expected in the Bay Area tonight, gusts reaching as high as 25 mph under clear skies with temps in the upper-50s. My free baseball pick is on Cain and the Giants.
