At this point, the Rays and Angels are basically .500 teams and they will complete their four-game series in Clearwater this afternoon. The team from Anaheim goes after the series victory win.

The Halos being above .500 is remarkable, considering all their pitching injuries and the lack of consistent offense outside of the best player in baseball Mike Trout. Tampa Bay's offense has better than anticipated at 4.5 runs per game, but it has gone cold since Sunday with nine runs in last four games.

Let's dig and see what we have for this matinee in order to make a wise MLB picks.

Pitching Matchup - Wright vs. Andriese

Alex Meyer was the scheduled starter, but he went on the DL yesterday with a back issue, and he is being replaced by Daniel Wright (0-0, 5.54 ERA). The right-hander has made two long relief appearances and his lone start was on April 23rd when he tossed five scoreless innings against Toronto. At 26, Wright lacks the right assortment of pitches to be anything more than what he is and chances are this is not his last stop, coming over from Cincinnati last season.

Matt Andriese (4-1, 3.75) will be the Tampa Bay starter and he's gotten off to a good start this season. His ERA and batting average allowed (.241) are career lows at the moment. Andriese's downfall has been the third trip around the batting order, having just an average fastball, yet he has a good cutter and changeup. There are scouts in baseball who believe he could be a very good two to three innings reliever if he could throw mostly the cutter in change coming in the sixth or seventh inning.

These Offenses are not Perfect, yet are at least Mildly Effective

As good as Mike Trout has already been, he's on the way to a career-best campaign. Every aspect of his offense is better than it has ever been. The concern going forward is other than an aging Albert Pujols to drive in runs, the Angels do not have enough bats to cover up if Trout were to cool at anytime.

Go figure the Tampa Bay, sure that already have more than 100 strikeouts more than the next closest AL team, however, they are third in home runs and first in walks taken. Corey Dickerson has been a stud in hitting over .330 with a dozen dingers and Logan Morrison has also gone deep 12 times.

Betting Odds, History and Bullpen Numbers

The opening MLB odds had Tampa Bay as a -130 favorite with total of 8.5. The club from Anaheim has not minded West Florida one bit with a 7-3 record the last few visits, with the UNDER 7-3. Each bullpen remains a work in progress, with the Rays having the lower ERA, yet with lower save percentage, which has cost both squads.

The Winner Is......

Let's be honest, the Angels seems to be winning with mirrors. Today they have another fill-in starting pitcher, a pedestrian bullpen and not much offense outside of Trout and Pujols. Not pretending Tampa Bay is an outstanding choice, just the right one.
