L.A. Angels vs N.Y. Mets MLB Odds & Free Pick

A 7-game skid came to an end Friday night as the Mets took their series opener vs. the Angels, and they’re favored on the MLB odds to do it again Saturday evening in New York.

It wasn’t easy, but the New York Mets finally stopped their 7-game losing streak on Friday. Now we get to see if they can make it two in a row while the Los Angeles Angels attempt to climb back over the .500 mark and stay close in the AL West race. First pitch in New York is 7:15 PM (ET) with Alex Meyer on the bump for the Halos opposite Zach Wheeler of the Mets who are priced around -130 with BetOnline offering an 8 run total.

Jacob deGrom and three relievers combined on a 6-hit whitewashing of the Angels Friday evening as the Mets took the opener, 3-0. New York’s victory, which came as -165 chalk on the MLB odds, left this interleague series knotted up at eight wins apiece, and also left the totals even in the four games played at Citi Field.

Both Lineups Getting First Looks At Starting Pitchers

A 1st-round pick out of Kentucky by Washington in 2011, Meyer is now with his third big league club, fourth if you count being picked by the Red Sox in 2008 and not signing out of high school. He didn’t see much action the first few weeks due to off days for the Angels, but has settled into the rotation this month and is coming off his best start of the season, holding the Tigers to three hits and a run while pitching into the seventh for his second consecutive victory. He’s making the first start of his career against an NL club, and relies on a mid-90s fastball and strong slider.

Wheeler laid a couple of eggs in his previous outings, but has otherwise pitched better than his 2-2 record would indicate. He just held the D-Backs to a run in six innings at their hitter-friendly desert oasis, leaving with the game tied before New York’s bullpen decided to throw BP to the Arizona lineup. Tonight is his first look at the Angels, and Wheeler hasn’t fared well in six previous interleague starts with a 6.90 ERA to show for his 28+ innings of work.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Crew chief Gary Cederstrom becomes one of the first field arbiters to reach double-digit plate assignments this season when he calls balls and strikes tonight. The 29-year veteran checks in on a 4-game run of ‘over’ winners, leaving him 6-3 O/U in 2017, and has also been a boon to home chalk with 7-of-8 fitting that description bringing home the bacon.

Clouds are in the picture for the NYC area this evening, but nothing that should bring rain. Look for the thermometer to be in the low-60s at first pitch with a light 6-9 mph SSE breeze (out to left). There isn’t much offense in either lineup, especially with the Angels minus a DH in this series, and that’s why my free baseball pick is on the ‘under.’
