The MLB slate on Sunday is capped off by the appearance of Clayton Kershaw to face the Mets. Here are your MLB Picks of the Day to set you up for the holiday weekend.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Mets
When we think about all of the pitchers that have graced the mound at every ball park in every stadium, Clayton Kershaw (7-1, 1.48 ERA) is making a great case for his legacy as he's sure to be a first ballot hall of famer barring injury.

Kershaw takes the mound tonight on national television against a superior New York Mets (28-20) team and an ageless Bartolo Colon (4-3, 3.44 ERA) Colon that has managed to cement his spot in a really elite Mets pitching rotation with consistency. This ought to be a very competitive and possibly low scoring game if Colon can match the brilliance of the great Kershaw.

A Possible Revenge Game
Last night was a day where the old New York Mets brought back the players from their 1986 Championship team. It was supposed to mark a day of celebration as Noah Syndergaard took to the mound and New York was looking for a win as they battle it out for 1st place in the National League East Division with the Washington Nationals.

Instead, a pitch got away from Syndergaard and was thrown behind Chase Utley. Syndergaard was thrown out of the game and the Mets got beaten up by the Dodgers, 9-1 as Chase Utley hit two home runs off the Mets, including a grand slam.

Tonight's game is a big game for New York and they have to face the best pitcher in the majors. This appears to be a tall order. David Wright had started to get his swing back, hitting 3 home runs in a week, but he didn't play yesterday. We'll have to wait for the starting lineups to be put out, but I'm going to assume that Wright isn't playing.

Who To Keep An Eye On?
Chase Utley, as mentioned, had a huge game yesterday, with 2 HR and 5 RBI and has extended his batting average to .296. He was supposed to be done as a baseball player, but playing in his native Southern California has put the spark back in his game. Also, Adrian Gonzalez, who is slowly closing in on 300 career home runs, was 4 for 5 yesterday and has his average up to .295. Gonzo also has a good eye at the plate and get's a lot of free passes.

For the Mets, Yoenis Cespedes is the main bat in the lineup. He was held hitless yesterday, but has crushed the baseball this season with 15 HR, 36 RBI, and a .288 BA. We can also add in the talent of young Michael Conforto (8 HR, 24 RBI, and .270 BA) and the surprsing power of Neil Walker (11 HR), but will it be enough tonight? I don't think so. We're playing with house money on the MLB Odds, and the Dodgers are our MLB Pick.

Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves
I don't know if we can call it surging as the Atlanta Braves are 14-34 and 4-20 at home. However, the Braves have shown a little life at home, going 2-2 in their last 4 games. The Miami Marlins have been a disappointment at 25-24. Star, Dee Gordon, got caught using PED's which is the big shocker of all time, figuring that Gordon is slender in build at 170 pounds. With Barry Bonds as hitting coach and Don Mattingly as manager, the Marlins were supposed to make a big jump this season, but without their two best players producing on the field, they're a mere game over .500.

Giancarlo Stanton
Stanton can possibly be considered the most powerful hitter in baseball, but the month of May has been an utter disaster for him. He's hitting just .173 with 4 HR and 7 RBI in May and this is adding in that he's been hitting for average lately. For the past week, Stanton is hitting .273 but still only has 1 RBI during this time. This is supposed to be one of the best players in the MLB and he's getting outhit by a 40 year old David Ortiz on his Farewell Tour.

The Marlins might be able to get away with sub-standard play such as this against the worst team in baseball in the Atlanta Braves, but without Stanton's bat, opposing pitchers have nothing to be afraid of.

This afternoon, Julio Teheran (1-4, 2.57 ERA), who is a good major league pitcher that doesn't get run support, has a chance to sweep the Marlins and the Braves have momentum on their side. Look for Atlanta to go for the sweep. Freddie Freeman may be their leading hitter at just .260, but pitching is the key to winning and Teheran can shut down an opposing team.
