It's Labor Day Weekend and that means that were coming down the home stretch where the MLB Regular Season is concerned. That said, Sunday presents a lot of sub-par starting pitching matchups. Watch as we attempt to take advantage of this fact as we provide you with our valuable MLB Picks of the Day for Sunday.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners

Too Little, To Late?

At 60-75, the Los Angeles Angels, as a team, are major underachievers and a recent 11 game losing streak didn't help their cause. Since then, the Halos have been playing a lot better, winning 9 out of their last 12 games. This afternoon, the Angels face a major test in the form of Seattle Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (14-10, 4.01 ERA). Iwakuma, who is having an average season, is still known as one of the better pitchers in the American League and the M's are still in the playoff race, 5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the 2nd wild-card spot in the AL. As we hit Labor Day, this game is a "must-win" for the Mariners as they're facing a losing team and playing at Safeco Field.

The Mariners' Problem
The Seattle Mariners are coming off a very demoralizing 10-3 loss to the Angels. This was a game that saw Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout, and Albert Pujols go back to back to back home runs against the M's.

We already know that Mike Trout has been tearing the cover off of the baseball and is the best player in the game, but Calhoun and Pujols each slammed 2 dingers in yesterday's game. With Calhoun coming alive, there's no relief for the opposing pitcher where the top of the Angels lineup is concerned. Mike Trout is hitting a sizzling .550 in his last 20 at-bats with 3 HR and 6 RBI and he's owned the Mariners this season, hitting .353 with 7 HR and 17 RBI in 51 at-bats. Albert Pujols is also hitting .381 with 3 HR and 5 RBI in his last 21 at-bats. Look for Iwakuma to pitch around  Mike Trout especially and this could present more problems for the native of Japan.

As for the Seattle Mariners, they haven't provided Hisashi Iwakuma with a ton of run support (7 runs in 3 his last 3 starts) and this has led to 3 consecutive losses for Iwakuma despite not pitching that badly. The Angels are the hot team ,with the best player in baseball, and have great value in this game. Los Angeles is the MLB pick.

Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets

Pivotal Matchup For the Amazins
This is the rubber matchup of this 3 game series between the New York Mets (70-66) and Washington Nationals (79-56) and although every game counts for both squads, this game is of greater importance to New York as they're closing in on a wild-card berth, just 1 game behind the St. Louis Cardinals and 2 in the loss column. The Mets have also have built a bit of confidence coming into this game after a 3-1 victory over the Nats on Saturday. This is the rubber match of the series and should  be competitive as both teams are sending out fairly inexperienced starting pitchers.

Even though the pitching matchup is fairly even with 2- 2-2 pitchers, the Mets have to feel good about the transition of Seth Lugo from reliever to starter. In Lugo's 3 starts this season, he's provided 3 quality outings. In these 3 starts, Lugo has allowed just 5 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings pitched. He's also won his last 2 decisions.

Players To Watch
Facing hitters such as Bryce Harper (23 HR, 76 RBI, .253 BA) and Daniel Murphy (25 HR, 98 RBI, .340 BA) will be the ultimate test for Lugo. Daniel Murphy has been tearing apart his old team as he's hitting .407 with 7 HR and 21 RBI in 59 at- bats against the New York Mets. Sunday Night Baseball is also the grand stage for players to showcase their talent. This is the perfect spot for Daniel Murphy to stick it to his former team once again.

For the Mets, Asrdubal Cabrera has really revived his career. He's a fan favorite and is getting hot at the right time. He's hitting .389 in his last 18-at bats with 3 HR and 5 RBI. The Mets become extra deadly with Jose Reyes, who has been on base frequently hitting ahead of Cabrera in the lineup. With the Mets coming off of a solid victory, having more incentive to win, and with a slight edge in the pitching department, I like New York to win the rubber game of this series at a decent betting value.
