Royals start of the season hasn't been on a very high note and today things could get difficult as they take on the Twins. It seems that oddsmakers have set a standard total line for this matchup so is there value on backing under or over the total?

Kansas City Royals

Nate Karns gets the start for Kansas City and comes in with a 4.46 ERA and 1.21 whip. The 29-year-old veteran is actually having a good season so far, his last three starts have been outstanding allowing just two earned runs over his last 17 innings versus the White Sox, Tampa Bay, and Baltimore. The issue for him today could be the fact he’s been terrible on the road with a 6.56 ERA and batters hitting .286 against him.

However, that is mostly due to just a couple bad starts and I like for him to continue his recent good pitching momentum to keep Minnesota low in the numbers. At the plate, Kansas City has been less than stellar this season and rank in the bottom part of major league baseball in most offensive statistics. Although I thought it was smart to back them yesterday against New York they are simply a different hitting team on the road. Kansas City is currently hitting just .228, averaging 3.26 runs, and has a team OPS of .649 ranking them 28th, 30th, and 29th in the major leagues respectively.

Minnesota Twins

Hector Santiago gets the start for Minnesota and comes in with a 3.80 ERA and 1.29 whip. I expect for him to pitch a really good ballgame today considering he is coming off a horrible performance in Cleveland allowing six earned runs off of seven hits in just over two innings of work mostly by allowing three home runs. He is a solid veteran pitcher outside of that horrible last performance, catching a pretty hot Cleveland offense, by the way, he has been stellar this season and I expect for them to pitch well today.

Minnesota has been decent but still rank just outside the top half of the league in most categories. Currently, they are hitting .240 as a team and averaging eight hits per game ranking them 21st and 22nd in the league respectively. I am predicting the Twins to score a few runs and most likely come out with a win but for Santiago to keep Kansas City low in the numbers and combining with Karns for this to stay under the total.

Kansas City Royals vs Minnesota Twins

Oddsmakers have set a total of 8 for this contest and for my MLB pick I will back under the total. Both of these pitchers have been decent enough on the year and neither these offenses statistically have been very good. Expect a low-scoring affair.
