Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees are underdogs on the MLB odds Friday night when they open what should be an entertaining weekend series against the Astros.

MLB Season Record: 41-44 (-3.14)

Young talent? The New York Yankees and Houston Astros each have plenty, and that makes their weekend series one of the most intriguing battles as the schedule turns the corner from June to July. Lance McCullers Jr. is set to deliver the first pitch in Friday’s series opener at 8:10 PM (ET) with Michael Pineda opposing him, and early action on Houston has driven their money line up to -176 at BetOnline with 7½ for the total.

New York has struggled with a 4-12 record the last half of June that cost the Yankees the lead in the AL East lead, where Boston now holds a 1-game advantage. Houston has been sporting the best record in the business for a couple of months now, and an explosive offense has the Astros up more than 19 units against the MLB odds after 80 games.

McCullers Sporting Sub-2.00 ERA At Home

Pineda will be happy to get the month of June behind him after coming up with only one quality start and New York dropping four of his five outings. He was throwing BP to Texas hitters last Sunday in the Bronx, serving up three long balls and charged with seven runs in four frames. Both road starts in June have gone almost as bad, the big Dominican combining for 11 innings and 10 runs allowed in stops at Toronto and Anaheim. He has pitched well in Houston his last two tries, however, splitting the decisions with a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings.

McCullers looked good in his first appearance after a DL stint, working five innings at Seattle last Saturday and striking out eight while limiting the Mariners to one run. It was Houston’s seventh consecutive win behind the 23-year-old and 12th in his 14 starts to leave bettors up nearly 10 units when following him and the Astros on the MLB odds. All six of his home outings have gone into Houston’s win column, McCullers pitching to a super 1.95 ERA at Minute Maid. He beat the Yanks in New York earlier this season with six shutout innings.

Rivalry Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

As interleague foes, the only victory earned in three series by the Astros was a 6-pitcher no-hitter at the House That Ruth Built in ’03, New York winning the other eight games. Since becoming AL rivals, the series isn’t so one-sided with the Yanks winning 15 of 29 matchups. Houston went to the Bronx in May and took 3 of 4 from the pinstripe posse to leave the Astros 9-7 at the House That George Built. The Yanks won 2 of 3 in Houston last season, ‘under’ bettors also cashing twice in that set.

There is a slight chance of a passing shower in Houston, but it’s the heat that will keep the roof shut at Minute Maid all series. I’ll take a flier on the Yankees for my free baseball pick.
