Chicago’s pitching looks to be finding a groove, but can Jake Arrieta continue that as a small road favorite on the MLB odds in the series opener at Miami on Thursday?

MLB Season Record: 35-42 (-7.49)

A rematch from a set earlier this month gets underway with a rematch on the mound when the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins open a 4-game series Thursday evening. First pitch at Marlins Park is 7:10 PM (ET) with Jeff Locke (0-2, 4.58) toiling for the home side against Chicago’s Jake Arrieta (6-5, 4.64). 5Dimes has Chicago -125 on its morning line with 9 for the total.

Miami began this long homestand, which concludes next week with a visit from the Mets, by taking 2 of 3 from Washington. The Cubs are just setting out on a long 11-game roadie that will take them to Washington and Cincinnati next week and begin the trip 1½ games behind the Brewers in the NL Central race.

Fish Still Looking For 1st Win With Locke

Arrieta and Locke faced off at Wrigley on June 6, and it turned out to be one of Arrieta’s better starts of the season as the Cubs pulled away late for an easy 10-2 win. Chicago’s former Cy Young winner allowed two runs in six innings of work to get the dubya as -200 chalk on the MLB odds, Locke taking the loss with 4.2 IP and three earned runs charged to his ledger.

That contest marked the fifth consecutive assignment Arrieta went six frames, and he has failed to get through five in his two starts since. This will be just his second start in Miami in a Cubs jersey, the right-hander winning the previous outing with seven innings of 1-run baseball. The Marlins are 0-4 with Locke on the bump since he made a decent season debut against the Diamondbacks just before facing Arrieta and the Cubs. His subsequent three assignments were on the road in Chicago, Pittsburgh and Atlanta, Locke owning a career 1.51 ERA in four starts on this mound.

Rivalry Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Arrieta’s win helped the Cubs to two of the three games at Wrigley and they have won or tied the last four season series, yet it’s the Marlins who still lead this rivalry all-time, 95-93. They also hold a 10-7 edge in this ballpark since it opened in 2012, including five of the last six here. Totals were split 2-2 O/U in last season’s 4-game set.

The roof was closed for all three games against the Nationals this week, and I suspect it will be shut tonight at Marlins Park with temps outside still in the mid-80s and muggy air outside the stadium. I don’t have a good feel for either pitcher or lineup dominating, and will run with the ‘under’ for my free baseball pick.
