Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Toronto Blue Jays were widely regarded as the best hitting team in baseball last season especially against lefties. That hasn’t translated to April here in 2016 as the Jays lineup has been scuffling of late held to 1 run in the final two games of their series against the Chicago White Sox and their team batting average against southpaws is .224 averaging 3.33 runs per game and right now, last year’s strong numbers against lefties for the Jays do not matter a whole lot because the current form is indicating the Jays aren’t hitting well right now especially against lefty pitching. That could be trouble against Rays lefty Drew Smyly in this matchup and he has been on a solid run allowing 3 earned runs with a 28-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his last 22 innings of work in his last three starts.

It may not be an easy task for this slumping Jays team to bust out of their funk. However, Tampa Bay is not a potent offensive team and it has shown as they’ve scored 3 runs or less in five of their last six games and will face a very promising young starter in Aaron Sanchez who will look to bounce back after his first rough outing of the season against Oakland. Prior to that, Sanchez was dominant allowing just 4 runs in 20 innings over his first three starts one of which came against this Tampa Bay squad.

The Jays will be motivated to bounce back from being swept in 3 games at home by the White Sox but the team is out of sorts right now and until I see a turnaround, they are a team I do not want to back right now from a betting standpoint. I’ll lean to Tampa Bay and Under the total of 7.5 runs in this game as my MLB pick. These teams should feature a pair of pitchers that have the opportunity to perform well here.

Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals
This will be a big series between two teams that haven’t exactly faced a boatload of elite competition in the first month of the season. It could be advantage Nationals here in the series opener. Stephen Strasburg is finally healthy and pitching like it with a 2.17 ERA in four April starts. His ground ball rate has soared upward from 42% last year to 55% in the first month of this season which means he is inducing much weaker contact on his pitches from opposing hitters.

He owns a sub 3 ERA in his previous starts against the Cardinals and is certainly entering this outing in good form. Mike Leake is a ‘bet against’ pitcher for me right now as he is a hittable starter right now as evidenced by his 5.64 ERA allowing 17 runs on 28 hits in 22.1 innings this season. Leake has an extremely low 5.1% swinging strike rate which is a career worst for him. He has been giving up fewer softer hit balls and has had an increase in hard hit balls/line drives so far this season and that is a recipe for potential disaster against the Nationals who own a few power bats in their lineup led of course by Bryce Harper.

The Nationals have the 3rd ranked bullpen in MLB right now with a 2.08 ERA so if the game is close late, they may hold an edge over the Cardinals bullpen which is only ranked in the middle of the pack. Washington has been installed as a solidly priced road favorite at -125 which is currently available at Heritage Sports. This price on Washington may rise prior to first pitch but I feel it is warranted with Strasburg showing better numbers on the MLB odds and better peripheral/advanced stats than Leake heading into this Friday night matchup.
