Boston’s bats have been a big part of the current 5-game win streak, but the MLB odds imply that run ends Tuesday when the Red Sox battle the Rangers in Texas. This capper disagrees.

MLB Season Record: 42-44 (-1.46)

Most things have been going Boston’s way during a current 5-game win streak. The offense has been there as evidenced by the Red Sox scoring 42 runs, plus the defense and pitching have been solid with their opposition plating 14. About the only thing going wrong has involved the media and David Price, and the southpaw will be in the spotlight again tonight when he takes the mound in Texas against Yu Darvish and the Rangers.

ESPN will carry the broadcast starting at 8 PM (ET), Texas chalked around -125 and 9 the scoreboard target. The clubs went 11 innings before deciding things Monday, the Red Sox rebounding for a 7-5 win after blowing a late lead. Bookmaker closed Boston -116 for the tilt, which marked the 5th straight win in the rivalry for the Red Sox. They swept three at Fenway about six weeks ago, and Monday’s final was the third ‘over’ winner in the last four games played in Texas.

Totals Running 5-18-1 O/U/P In Two Hurlers’ Starts

Boston’s current 5-game surge began with Price on the hill at home last week vs. the Twins. The former Vanderbilt standout worked seven and allowed three runs while striking out seven. The Red Sox have split his four road starts this year, keeping the ball in the park standing as Price’s primary problem away from home. He got pounded for 12 hits and six runs before being relieved in the third in Texas last year, though Boston overcame that effort to rally for an 8-7 triumph.

Though he has pitched pretty well his last two assignments, neither Darvish nor the Rangers could make it pay off and Texas is now 1-6 his last seven trips to the hill. The best way to play the MLB odds when he takes the mound has been to bet on the ‘under,’ those tickets cashing 13 of his 17 starts so far. He missed facing the Red Sox when the clubs met in Boston earlier, and tonight will be just his fourth career start against them (1-1, 3.62).

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The hulking Jordan Baker is scheduled to call balls and strikes for this one, and the Oklahoma native brings a pretty flat 6-7-1 O/U/P record into the contest. He has been a boon for road underdogs, however, those clubs coming out on top in 8 of 12 games so far. Texas has won three of his four plate assignments in Arlington, totals splitting in those matchups.

It won’t be quite as warm as it was for Monday’s opener, but the thermometer will still be around 90° for tonight’s first pitch with a light SE breeze (in from center). I’m going with the hotter team for my free baseball pick and betting Boston.
