It has been a reversal of fortunes in the NL Central for Chicago and Milwaukee the last two weeks, and we have a free MLB pick for their series opener at Miller Park on Friday night.

MLB Season Record: 51-56-1 (-3.25)

The hunter has become the hunted in the NL Central race as the Chicago Cubs have taken a slight lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. Those two rivals now go at each other in a weekend series that begins with a battle between left-handers when Jose Quintana (6-8, 4.22) and Brent Suter (1-1, 2.84) oppose each other in Friday’s series opener at Miller Park. BetOnline has installed Chicago as -136 chalk with 9 for the total.

The Cubs start the set with a slim 1½-game lead in the division thanks to an 11-2 record since the midseason vacation. Milwaukee has slumped with a 4-9 record at the same time and arrives home after taking a 15-2 beating in Washington on Thursday.

Suter Facing Cubs For 1st Time As Starter

Quintana has delivered victories in his first two starts for the Cubs after leaving the White Sox on a 5-game win streak in his outings. The 28-year-old served up a couple of long balls to St. Louis hitters last Sunday, but otherwise was stingy and has now whiffed 19 batters in his first 13 frames for the defending champions. He has faced the Brewers twice during his career and baffled them with just one run charged to his ledger over 15 innings.

After beginning the season in Milwaukee’s bullpen and bouncing back and forth between the parent club and Triple-A Colorado Springs, Suter was installed in the rotation earlier this month with some positive results. The Brewers have split the four assignments since the change, but three of them were quality starts. The southpaw’s only experience against the Cubs came from the bullpen, three scoreless appearance and one shelling suffered in Milwaukee when a couple of walks figured heavily in a 4-run frame.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

This has been a pretty even rivalry over the years, all but their three 1997 interleague matchups coming as division rivals and each side winning on their home diamonds at just over a .500 clip. The clubs split their most recent six meetings in Chicago, one of them coming just before the All-Star break in the form of a makeup contest. The Cubs took two of the three April games in Beer City, ‘over’ bettors also cashing twice at Miller Park where totals have run 5-2 O/U on the MLB odds the last seven clashes.

It should be a lovely July evening for a ballgame, the thermometer around 70° for first pitch under clear skies and a 10-12 mph NNE breeze (in from left). Two teams going in different directions and Chicago hammering southpaws this year leave me with a free baseball pick on the run line.
