Pittsburgh is making a push up the NL Wild Card ranks, but the Pirates are underdogs on the MLB odds Tuesday in San Francisco against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants.

MLB Season Record: 50-54-1 (-2.25)

Having climbed back to .500 for the year at 50-50, the Pittsburgh Pirates take aim at a series clincher tonight in San Francisco against the Giants. The final game on Tuesday’s card pits Jameson Taillon (6-3, 3.08) against Madison Bumgarner (0-4, 3.57), with San Francisco priced around -125 and 7 for the total.

The Pirates took advantage of a San Francisco error to build an early lead Monday en route to a 10-3 triumph, Bookmaker closing Pittsburgh as -146 road chalk. The Giants swept three in Pittsburgh when the clubs got together a little more than three weeks ago, and that wasn’t weird at all since the teams have taken turns beating each other in their new parks. The Bucs are now 30-25 at AT&T since it opened in 2000, sweeping their last two trips here with three of those six games going ‘over’ and another three pushing 7 run totals.

Will 7th Start Of Season Prove Lucky For Bumgarner?

Deep counts have led to Taillon only getting through six full frames twice in his last 10 starts, but that’s the only negative thing we can say about the young hurler. He’s coming off a win over the Brewers last Thursday as -125 chalk on the MLB odds, the Pirates’ fifth win in his seven assignments since coming off the DL. His only appearance against the Giants came here last August, a no-decision for Taillon but a quality start and win for the Buccos.

Still looking for his first win of the season, the Giants are also winless in Bumgarner’s six starts. Two of those have come since he came off the DL post-break, both of those vs. the Padres with the southpaw combining for 13.1 innings and seven runs allowed. Most troubling in those efforts were the four long balls hit off Bumgarner. The Pirates have given him a little trouble in recent years, San Francisco dropping three of his four outings against them with David Freese, Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer batting a combined .406 (13-32, 2 HR).

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Giants skipper Bruce Bochy was tossed by Chris Conroy for questioning his strike zone on Monday, and now crew chief Jerry Meals moves behind the dish, with Meals having ejected Bochy once in the past. The Pennsylvania native brings a level 9-9-1 O/U/P record into the matchup, his last three plate assignments going ‘over’ the totals.

It looks like a typical July day in the Golden Gate City, temps in the low 60s at game time with clear skies and, of course, a little wind (10-14 mph out to center). Bumgarner is going to notch a dubya at some point, but my free baseball pick tonight is on the underdog Bucs.
