Detroit Tigers vs Boston Red Sox

Is It Payback Day?
The Boston Red Sox (55-42) must think so as they send the ever reliable knuckleballer, Steven Wright (12-5, 2.67 ERA) to the mound as he faces a very unreliable pitcher for the Detroit Tigers in Mike Pelfrey (3-9, 4.78 ERA). While the Tigers also possess one of the offenses that can keep pace with the Sox, Pelfrey is a real black mark and Boston certainly has the bats to send Pelfrey to an early shower en route to a victory.

Last night's game could be expected as Detroit picked up the win 4-2. Justin Verlander, who was once one of the top two pitchers in the American League, raised his record to 10-6 as he allowed just 1 run on hits in 6 innings. Boston outhit the Tigers 10-8, but it was Detroit that came up with the timely hits.

Getting back to Mike Pelfrey, the only thing that I can say is that he's had some quality starts. It's the really poor outings that have hurt him.

In Pelfrey's last 6 starts, he's gone at least 5 innings and allowed 1 run or less in 4 of them. That's quite impressive along with his 3.36 ERA on the road. It's his occasional rotten outing which has hurt him and I don't see him holding the hard-hitting Red Sox to a mere run. Can Pelfrey be competitive is the question? He certainly has the offense to support him. This is a very deep Detroit Tigers lineup. So much, that shortstop, Jose Iglesias, filled in for Cameron Maybin in the number 2 spot in the lineup last night and was the main source of offense, hitting his 4th home run of the season to go along with 2 runs and 2 RBI's. It's just a matter of time before Miguel Cabrera (19 HR, 57 RBI, .296 BA) really starts to hit and Wright need's to approach Miggy with caution.

Bounceback for Betts
Look for a bounceback game from Mookie Betts. Betts was the only Red Sox starter not to get a hit in yesterday's game and he's been a reliable source of offense all season long. Betts is hitting .303 with 20 HR and 63 RBI in the leadoff spot. He's also hitting a red-hot .378 in the month of July, including his 0 for 5 day yesterday. These are extraordinary numbers for a leadoff man. I look for the Red Sox to hit Pelfrey hard or at least knock him out of the game early. Make Boston your pick as the heavy chalk.

New York Yankees vs Houston Astros

Revenge For Houston?
Last night's Yankees victory was a huge surprise as Michael Pineda and the Yankee bullpen shut down the hard-hitting Astros offense. As the Yankees radio announcers put it, this is the first time all season that the Yankees are 3 games over .500 or better. Normally, when the New York Yankees get hot, I jump on the bandwagon and profit, but in this case, they're still showing an inability to hit the baseball as they only defeated the Astros 2-1 in Houston last night. Any team can have a poor game and when you have horses such as Carlos Correa, George Springer, and the great Jose Altuve, you can't expect an offense like Houston's to stay down long.

George Springer
Springer continued his hot hitting yesterday as he led off the game with a home run. It ended up being Houston's only run of the game. Springer, who's hitting .263 this season,  has upped his game this past week. He's on a 7 game hitting streak and has a RBI in 6 consecutive games. He also leads the Astros with 22 home runs on the season. Opposing pitchers can't afford to pitch around Springer as Jose Altuve has been the best player in all of baseball. My point is that George Springer will continue to see some good pitches and it's up to him to capitalize on the opportunities that he receives.

I look for the Astros, who trail the Texas Rangers by 3 1/2 games in the American League West Division, to be competitive tonight. The Yankees simply don't have a reliable offense. Guys like Jacoby Ellsbury are proving to be busts when signing large contracts. I'll take the Astros as my MLB Pick here
