In Seattle I am backing the under the total when the Cleveland Indians visit the Seattle Mariners. Trevor Bauer takes the hill for the tribe against 22 year old Taijuan Walker for the Mariners.
This jumped out at me as MLB odds makers set this line at 7.5. It makes a little bit of sense with Bauer on the mound who has been spectacular this year, but not so much with Walker and his big ERA. Still, when looking at the matchups this game will have all the makings of a low scoring affair.
Bauer vs. Walker
Bauer comes in with a 3.02 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. The 24 year old out of UCLA has been very solid this year. In his last three starts he has only allowed three runs in 21 innings of work. He starting to come into his prime and I look for him to be a very good major league pitcher going forward. For the Mariners, Walker comes in with a 7.33 ERA and 1.84 WHIP. He has had a couple rough outings this year against Oakland and Houston which has inflated his numbers a bit. Still, he is only 22 years old and is not as bad as his number indicate. At home he has been much better with a 3.31 ERA and batters are only hitting .220 off of him in Seattle.
Overall Cleveland comes in with better numbers than Seattle and rank 7th in the league in runs per game compared to the Mariners ranked 22nd. Both teams though rank in the middle to bottom half of the league in batting average and total bases. Nothing really jumps out offensively on these two teams, but Cleveland has been hot recently averaging over five runs a game in their last three games.
Back to the line, it is seems too low all things considered with a 24 year old in Bauer facing the 22 year old Walker. But for my MLB pick, I will side with odds makers and anticipate Bauer to continue his recent strong showing and for Walker to have a nice outing at home.
