If Mother Nature Permits, Scherzer & Nats Too Much for Yankees

Is rain the only thing that can stop Max Scherzer these days? The ace carries big chalk on the MLB odds board into tonight’s battle between the Nationals and Yankees.

Imagine if you will a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to the average gambler. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between MLB futures bets and the actual World Series, and lies between probabilities and imagination. It is an area which we call Wednesday’s battle between the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals (7:05 PM ET, ESPN).

The series between two of the hottest teams going in the majors has indeed taken a Twilight Zone turn. Tuesday’s series opener was suspended after the top of the sixth with the score tied, 3-3. That contest is scheduled to be made up before tonight’s tilt, but both could be a wash with rain expected in the DC area all day and evening. If they can play, there’s a solid mound duel in store for us between veterans CC Sabathia (2-0, 2.23) and Max Scherzer (7-1, 1.69), the Nationals favored in the -160s on the baseball odds with 7½ for the total.

Sabathia Has 5.19 ERA In Last 6 Starts Vs. NL Clubs

Bookmaker closed New York as -128 chalk for Tuesday’s contest, the first time the teams had met since 2015 when they played short series in a home-&-home setup. The Nationals won both of the contests played in DC where the totals split. Washington will venture to New York in mid-June to finish off this year’s regular-season matchups between the clubs.

Boston got to Sabathia for four runs in four innings last Thursday in the Bronx, the southpaw not figuring into the decision which ultimately went to the Red Sox, 5-4. This will be his first start against the Nationals since 2009, Sabathia’s first season with the Yankees, a winner in New York where he pitched into the eighth of a 5-3 final. Scherzer comes off a 3-1 win in Arizona last Friday, tossing seven frames of 1-run baseball while whiffing 11. He lost to the Yanks in New York in 2015, his first year in Washington, and is 4-3 lifetime in seven starts against them with a 4.03 ERA (42.1 IP).

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

If Mother Nature does allow this one to be played, Ron Kulpa is expected to work the dish for Ted Barrett’s umpire crew. Kulpa is filling in for Kerwin Danley and is off to a 3-4 O/U start calling balls and strikes. This would be the smallest total for a Kulpa plate assignment, and his second game behind the mask in DC after working an ‘under’ winner here in mid-April during a Rockies-Nationals series.

The forecast will make it tough for Barrett and his crew to get this game in, but assuming they can, my free MLB pick is Washington on the run line.
