The Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays continue their 4-game weekend set with Game 2 scheduled for an 7:10 ET start on Friday night. Check our Free MLB Pick on the game here!

Game 1 was more of the same for both teams. Detroit rallied for 8 runs in the top of the 9th against the battered Tampa Bay bullpen to take a 10-7 victory in Game 1. The victory for Detroit means the Tigers have won 3 straight and are 26-17 following their 15-21 start.

Tampa Bay, a team who was projected to make a move in early June, suffered a miserable month. They enter July on a 2-13 slide, following a 9-2 streak. The Rays have clearly had their problems with winning teams, as they are just 10-26 vs. greater than .500 foes.

The Detroit rally in the 9th inning last night sets up great momentum for a Detroit team which played its best ball in the last ¼ of the season. There is little question they have a hitting advantage, as on the road, Detroit features a .746 batting OPS number (compared to .679) at home for Tampa Bay. But, the real edge for the Tigers tonight comes on the mound with Fulmer towing the rubber. For the year, Fulmer is 7-2 with a 2.40 ERA and outstanding .635 OPS. In his last 7 starts, Fulmer is 5-1 with a 0.61 ERA, allowing 2 or less runs in each of those starts. In the last 62 2/3 IP Fulmer has allowed just 1 homerun.

At the beginning of June, it appeared that Tampa Bay was about to make a move. My OPS ratings flashed a BUY sign on the Rays and they responded with a run of 9-2. Since then, however, it has been all downhill for Tampa Bay with a 2-13 mark. Is the 9th inning debacle of last night the nadir of their discontent? Not willing to risk money to call the turn. Rather it looks like another rocky night behind Rays’ starter, Smyly. Smyly takes the mound against his former employer with a record of 0-2 and 5.56 ERA against his former mates. Smyly is winless in his last 7 starts with a 0-4 record, after working 5 innings but allowing 8 runs and 10 hits in a loss to Baltimore his last time out.

The month of June was most telling for run line players of these two teams. 16 of 17 June losses by Tampa Bay were by 2 or more runs, while 13 of 17 Detroit victories in the month of June were by 2 or more runs. That’s enough for our MLB Picks to lay the runs and take the money offered by the MLB Odds with the chance for a huge score.
