We have some outstanding pitching matchups on this Thursday as individual teams are positioning themselves for the stretch run to the post-season. Here are our two MLB Picks of the Day.

Miami Marlins vs Cincinnati Reds

Big Game For the Fish
The National League East Division has become somewhat stagnant. Every team in the division is on a losing streak and it's just inevitable that the Washington Nationals will win the division as they've been leading all along. That said, the Miami Marlins (62-58), who have played poorly and are on a 2 game losing streak, are right in the thick of things where the 2nd wild card spot is concerned and if Washington has an epic collapse, the Marlins also have that factored in if they get on a roll. There's no Giancarlo Stanton to rely on, but other guys have been carrying this team all season long and there's no reason with Jose Fernandez (12-6, 2.81 ERA) starting tonight that the Marlins shouldn't win this game against a Cincinnati Reds team that's going nowhere.

An Elite Ace
You can always recognize an elite ace in the fact that he could not be pitching his best and the numbers are still there. That's the case for Jose Fernandez. Fernandez has dealt with injuries in the past and that can also be factored in, but he's managed to produce a more than respectable season and has helped in keeping Miami in the race for a post-season berth.

For the season, Fernandez has held the opposition to a .218 BA and has struck out 198 batters in 137 2/3 innings. He's not a pitcher that will walk a lot of batters and doesn't give up the long ball. These are all attributes that make him the ace of this staff and also make Miami the heavy chalk in this matchup. On the negative side, he hasn't won a start since July 23rd either due to lack of run support or the bullpen not holding up. Expect a stellar start from Jose Fernandez as the opposition has been a bottom-feeder all season long and Miami has a major incentive in breaking this losing streak.

Offense Has Been Clicking Lately
The Reds have won the first two games of this series, but this will be their biggest challenge in this series. Joey Votto is on a 9 game hitting streak and has been really tearing the cover off of the baseball as of late.

In the month of August, Votto is hitting a sizzling .418 with 1 HR and 11 RBI. Although he hasn't been going deep often, he's been getting on base with extra base hits and drawing free passes. This enables players such as Eugenio Suarez (19 HR, 58 RBI) and Brandon Phillips (2 HR, 13 RBI, .444 BA in August) to knock him in. The Reds are basically playing the spoiler role for the rest of their season and tonight is a major opportunity to put the dagger in the heart of Marlins' bettors and fans alike as a lot of bettors will be on Jose Fernandez and the Fish.

Good pitching wins games. Jose Fernandez and Miami are the play here despite the Reds outstanding offensive play as of late.

New York Mets vs San Francisco Giants

Poor Play At the Wrong Time
The San Francisco Giants (66-54) have been dominating the National League West Division all season long and have picked the wrong to play poorly. The Giants are on a 4 game losing streak and now find themselves chasing the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1 1/2 games behind L.A. Personally, I think the wind has been taken out of their sails and the Giants won't regain the top spot in the division. To make matters worse, they face the New York Mets ace in Jacob deGrom. No matter how the Mets are playing, deGrom will battle to the end and is one of the best pitchers in the MLB despite his win total. This will be a huge test for San Francisco and an opportunity to pick up the Mets at great value.

"deGrom is Da Man"

The Mets have been thinking that Matt Harvey was their hottest commodity in their pitching staff, but in reality, it's been the quiet man with the flowing locks in starter Jacob deGrom. Earned run average is the statistic that is the most important as people too often focus on wins. Thus far this season, deGrom possesses one of the best ERA's in the National League at 2.30.

In his last 4 outings, he's been nearly unhittable, allowing just 2 earned runs on 19 hits in 27 2/3 innings. The crime about is that deGrom has just 1 win to show for it as his team is lacking in the run support department. Look for Jacob deGrom to come strong in this game as he faces one of the best pitchers in baseball in Madison Bumgarner.

We don't need to get into the offenses as both of these pitchers have been more than adequate while their offenses have been ineffective. Under the total is the easy play here.
