The NL Wild Card game promises to be a classic pitching duel between Thor and MadBum. Ian Cameron provides his views on this game and an expert pick for all our readers.

NL Wildcard San Francisco Giants vs New York Mets

Madison Bumgarner and Noah Syndergaard will clash in what could turn out to be a classic starting pitching duel in Wednesday night’s NL Wildcard battle between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets. Bumgarner has been a big game, bring his ‘A’ game to the mound pitcher throughout his career with the Giants including carrying them to a World Series title in 2014 with multiple heroic performances in the World Series against the Royals. He enters this year’s playoffs with a dominant 2.14 ERA in 88.1 innings pitched during the postseason with the Giants since 2010 and San Francisco has an 11-3 record in those 14 postseason starts by their ace lefty. San Francisco won both of Bumgarner’s two starts against the NY Mets earlier this season allowing just 4 runs in 11 innings pitched.

On the flip side, Noah Syndergaard has pitched just about as well with a 2.60 ERA overall and a 2.87 home ERA this season and he had a 3.32 ERA in the playoffs last year for the Mets. New York only split the two starts he made against the Giants this season even though Syndergaard allowed just 4 runs in 13.2 innings pitched against San Francisco this season. Syndergaard has not pitched in 8 days prior to this game so the extra rest could be a good thing but also could be a bad thing and throw off his rhythm.

If the game is close in the latter stages, the edge might go to the NY Mets who have had a much steadier bullpen as the Giants blowing so many games late with their bullpen after the All-Star Break is the main reason why they lost their lead in the NL West division to the LA Dodgers and struggled so much just to hang on to their Wildcard spot. For that reason, while I like the idea of backing a proven big game pitcher in Madison Bumgarner at an even money price range, for my MLB pick I would prefer to back San Francisco in the first 5 innings as opposed to the full game with their bullpen concerns so I will provide a light betting opinion on the San Francisco Giants in the first 5 innings of this NL Wildcard game.
