Houston is red hot and is favored on the MLB odds with its ace on the mound Friday in Arlington. But the Rangers have their ace on the hill as well in the AL West showdown.

It’s called the Silver Boot Series, and over the years that boot has generally been worn by the Texas Rangers who have then applied it to the backside of the Houston Astros. So far this season, however, it’s the Astros who have been kicking rear ends around as they head to Arlington for a weekend set.

Game 1 should provide a playoff atmosphere despite the Rangers sitting under .500 and nearly a dozen games behind Houston in the AL West. Sparking the electricity is a mound clash between the clubs’ top two starters, Dallas Keuchel and Yu Darvish, and it’s the Astros who are road chalk tonight, After the game opened close to a pick ‘em at one shop, Houston is presently priced -126 where the ‘over’ is taxed a little more on an 8 run total.

Rangers Ballpark Has Been Tough On Keuchel

Neither Keuchel nor Darvish appeared when the clubs met in Houston a month ago, and while they each have plenty of history in this rivalry, Friday marks just the third time the two aces have matched up against one another. Both of the previous Keuchel-Darvish showdows came in Arlington, and neither was much of a pitchers duel with the Astros winning both times as huge underdogs on the MLB odds, 8-4 and 9-5.

While the Astros won those meetings, Keuchel himself has struggled on this mound. Eight career starts have yielded a 1-4 personal record with an ugly 6.46 ERA, Adrian Beltre and Ryan Rua two of the toughest outs for Keuchel. Darvish enjoyed success against Houston early in his career, coming close to no-hitting the Astros twice in 2013. His last six assignments against them have not go so well, the righthander 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA.

Rivalry Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

This is the second meeting of 2017 with four more to come between the Astros and Rangers the next 17 weeks. After struggling against Texas the past two seasons, Houston got off on the right foot to open May by taking 3-of-4 at Minute Maid, the Astros favored each time and ‘over’ bettors cashing the final three. The Rangers won 8-of-10 here last season, and are 15-2 at home dating to 2015 with nine of the last 13 on this diamond busting through the totals.

There could be real electricity in the air this weekend in Arlington where a good chance of rain and thunderstorms exist for all three contests. The weatherman is listing 25%-40% for rain chances this evening, the low-80s for the first pitch and a light ESE breeze. I’m listing the underdog Rangers for my free baseball pick.
