July comes to a close in Boston where the Red Sox look to stop their slide as underdogs on the MLB odds against the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians.

July’s close has been a little rough on the Boston Red Sox who have fallen out of the lead in the AL East. They hope to end it on a winning note, but it won’t be easy against the red-hot Cleveland Indians who come to town for the start of a 3-game set on Monday. Mike Clevinger (5-3, 3.20) is up for the Tribe against Boston’s Doug Fister (0-5, 7.46), BetOnline selling Cleveland on a -130 money line and listing 10½ for the scoreboard target.

Cleveland Indians vs. Boston Red Sox

Boston followed up on a 2-4 West Coast swing by dropping two of three to the Royals over the weekend, bettors following the Red Sox on the MLB odds off 5.7 units since the All-Star break. The Indians just saw a 9-game win streak end Sunday in Chicago against the White Sox, and presently hold a slim 2-game lead over Kansas City in the AL Central.

Clevinger Starts Running 4-9 O/U
Cleveland has won three of Clevinger’s four July assignments, though the dubya last week against the Angels wasn’t because of his fine pitching. Gifted with an early 7-run lead, the 26 year old couldn’t make it through the fifth and the Indians eventually went extra innings before winning on an Edwin Encarnacion walk-off slam. Monday night marks Clevinger’s first appearance against the Red Sox.

Fister has made just one start since the midseason break, his other three appearances this month coming from the bullpen. He pitched in relief on back-to-back days at Seattle early last week, working a scoreless inning one of those outings and taking the loss with 2.2 frames and two runs charged to him in the other. The former Fresno State star has made two starts at Fenway this summer, Boston losing both games to the Angels and Blue Jays while Fister surrendered nine runs on 14 hits in 10.1 innings.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
It has been close to a year since the old foes last met, the Red Sox winning both sets last season two games to one and having taken four of the last five played in Beantown. ‘Over’ bettors have come out on top in five of the last six matchups on this diamond, though both clubs sport ‘under’ tendencies in the 2017 campaign.

The weatherman says ESPN’s broadcast tonight will begin at 80° on the thermometer with clear skies and a light southerly breeze (out to left). I’ve got no confidence in Fister making my free baseball pick an easy decision to go with Cleveland.
