We’re going to examine Saturday’s NL Central clash between the Cardinals & Reds. Go inside to read our informative betting preview article on this game which culminates with a money line pick.
NL Central Rivals in Early Saturday Start
The Cardinals and Reds will meet for the third of a four game series on Saturday. The first pitch at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati is slated for 1:05 PM ET. These teams have seen nine of their thirteen encounters this season go under the total, and St. Louis is 8-5 during those meetings.
Important Note for Saturday
Cincinnati won the opening game of the series on Thursday by a decisive 11-0 margin. Last night’s game was suspended due to inclement weather with the scored tied 2-2 in the 7th inning. The teams will resume that contest at 12:35 PM ET today, prior to the start of Saturday’s regularly scheduled game.
Starting Pitcher Report
Lance Lynn gets the starting assignment on Saturday for St. Louis. Lynn has been shaky during his last five starts, posting a lofty 5.16 ERA and 1.90 WHIP.
Cincinnati will send Anthony DeScalfini to the mound today. The Reds right-hander has displayed very good form during his previous three starts, posting a stellar 2.28 ERA, and had a better than 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio. DeScalfini has gone 2-0 versus St. Louis this season with a superb 1.38 ERA. The Reds hurler has an impressive 1.82 ERA during eleven starts when facing NL Central opponents in 2015.
Cardinals in a Funk
St. Louis enters today having lost four of the last five, and six of their previous eight games. The Red Birds have struggled offensively of late, averaging a paltry 2.4 runs per game, hitting .197 as a team, and compiling a pathetic .558 OPS over their previous seven contests. The Cardinals usually reliable pitching staff has failed them during that same time frame, allowing 6.9 runs per game, and opponents have a batting average of .317.
Cincinnati enters today averaging 6.1 runs per outing over their previous twelve games. Despite that solid offensive production during that stretch, they’ve managed to go just 6-6. The Reds have gone over the total in seven of their previous eight games.
The Reds clearly have a sizable edge over the Cardinals in regards to recent offensive numbers. If you haven’t looked inside the recent performance lines of today’s starting pitchers, most would favor Lance Lynn over Anthony DeScalfini. However, I’ve already detailed how the Cincinnati starter has performed better than his pitching adversary for today. Based on each of these teams whole body of work in 2015, St. Louis is far and away superior to Cincinnati. With that being said, it has very little to do with the task at hand for Saturday. I like the home underdog value in this spot, and that will be one of my MLB picks for Saturday.
