Pitcher’s Report & Best Bets August 7th

Masahiro Tanaka (NYY) vs. Tampa Bay Rays

It’s no secret that Tanaka wasn’t at his best in his first start of the season. Tanaka went just 2.2 innings and exited after allowing one earned run and four hits. He also struck out three batters and walked one. Hard contact was a concern but if you look at Tanaka’s numbers against the Rays, there should be no concern.

Tanaka has faced the Rays in 134 at-bats and allowed just 32 hits with a .239 average. He’s struck out Rays batters 37 times and walked them just 6 times while allowing just four home runs and 14 extra-base hits in that span.

Tanaka figures to be stretched out in this game and go deeper than just three innings. Five innings seems like a number Tanaka will reach in this game.

Mike Zunino, Austin Meadows, Ji-Man Choi, Kevin Kiermaier, Joey Wendle, Brandon Lowe, Hunter Renfroe, and more all hit under .300 against Tanaka.

These MLB odds are really fair if he can go five innings.

Jeff Samardzija (SFG) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Bats

The Dodgers are always one of the top teams when looking at groups of bats to stack in fantasy or when picking home run props.

Currently, Jeff Samardzija has an ERA of 9.31 on the season after allowing five runs in both starts this season without making it into the 6th inning. Samardzija has allowed 11 hits and three home runs in 9.2 innings pitched this season and will now go up against “team launch angle.”

He hasn’t fared well against those Dodgers bats in his career.

Cody Bellinger is hitting 3-11 with a home run and four runs batted in, along with three walks. A.J. Pollock is batting .333 with two home runs while Justin Turner and Joc Pederson are also hitting .333 with three extra-base hits each against Samardzija. Only Max Muncy has struggled against Samardzija with a .100 average as he’s gone 1-10 but those nine outs have been in-play outs.

The Dodgers are one of the best power teams in the league. One of these guys will likely hit one over the wall. The sportsbooks even set Bellinger’s line lower than expected. It’s worth it though.
