Blanked by Gerrit Cole on Friday, the Diamondbacks turn to Zack Greinke as a small underdog on the MLB odds to even the set with Houston on Saturday.

It’s an intriguing potential matchup for the Fall Classic, pitting former NL foes and current division leaders though the suits at FOX might disagree that having a couple of teams from the Southwest Region of the Lower 48 collide in the World Series was a good thing. Regardless, it’s an intriguing interleague series right now as the defending champion Houston Astros continue their weekend set in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.

The 8:10 PM (ET) start is also an interesting matchup of veteran righthanders on the mound as Houston sends Charlie Morton (4-0, 1.72) out opposite Zack Greinke (3-2, 4.50). Houston is drawing the mild chalk line around -120 with an 8-run total juiced to the ‘under.’

Both Hurlers Coming Off 10-K Performances

Gerrit Cole was nearly unhittable in Friday’s series opener, tossing a 1-hit shutout and striking out 16 to lead the Astros to an 8-0 rout on a -200 closing line at Bookmaker. It’s the fifth consecutive season the clubs have found each other on their interleague schedules, Houston entering the weekend having won 12 of the last 18 and the Diamondbacks 70-54 overall dating back to when they were NL counterparts. Totals split at each locale in a pair of 2-game sets last year, and had gone Dutch the last six in Phoenix before Friday’s ‘under.’

Morton picked up his fourth win of the campaign earlier this week against the Yankees, working into the eighth while allowing just a run and striking out 10. He beat the Diamondbacks in Houston last August, giving up a run and working into the seventh, and tonight is his first start in Phoenix since 2011 when he tossed six shutout frames.

Greinke has enjoyed three good efforts and three not so good, and is coming off one of the good ones against the Dodgers on Monday when he whiffed 10 to pick up an 8-5 win as -145 chalk on the MLB odds. He beat the Astros in Phoenix last season, tossing nearly seven innings of shutout baseball, but has struggled against Jose Altuve over the years (9-21, HR).

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Mike DiMuro, who worked a lighter schedule the last two seasons due to being hit by foul balls, is slated to call balls and strikes this evening for Brian Gorman’s crew. The New York native’s previous six plate assignments in 2018 have run 2-3-1 O/U/P, the push on an 8-run total in Phoenix two weeks ago in Arizona’s 6-2 win over the Padres.

They had the roof open Friday despite temps in the low-to-mid 90s, and the forecast is for triple-digit thermometer reading at game time today (5:10 local), so my guess is it will be closed. Greinke has been solid at home and has a good track record against Houston, and that’s why I’m taking the Snakes with my free baseball pick.
