Forecast for Game Time:
59° F/ 15° C

Detroit Tigers
Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a grand slam in the third game of this series, (his 100th career home run) and Shane Greene pitched six strong innings to lead the Tigers to a 7-3 win and 2-1 lead in this series. It was Greene's first start since undergoing shoulder surgery last August.

The Tigers are currently 13th in the majors with 35 runs scored, first with a .298 batting average and 6th with 10 home runs. Detroit is 21st in MLB with a 4.34 ERA and 21st with a 1.45 WHIP.

Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates have now lost four of their last five games since starting the season 4-0. Ryan Vogelsong made a spot start on Wednesday, replacing Francisco Liriano, who has a strained right hamstring. Volgelson allowed only one run and four hits in five innings and struck out five and issued no walks, Arquimedes Caminero gave up the grand slam to Saltalamacchia with two outs in the sixth inning.

The Pirates rank 15th in the majors with 32 runs scored, second with a .296 batting average and 29th with just 3 home runs. Pittsburgh is 10th in MLB with a 3.53 ERA and 16th with a 1.30 WHIP.

Pitching Matchup
Jordan Zimmermann (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Gerrit Cole (0-1, 5.79 ERA)

Jordan Zimmermann spent his career in the National League until signing with the Tigers this offseason, but he pitched in Pittsburgh just once, allowing four runs over six innings in a loss in 2014. Zimmermann’s debut with the Tigers went pretty well, as he shut out the Yankees on two hits over seven innings with three strikeouts and just three walks.

Gerrit Cole struggled in his season debut on Saturday in Cincinnati, giving up three runs and five hits over 4.2 innings. Cole struck out four and walked three in the 5-1 loss. The right-hander faced Detroit on April 13, 2015 in Pittsburgh and yielded a run on three hits over six innings with eight strikeouts in a 5-4 win.

Betting Trends
The Tigers are 2-0 in road games, 3-1 in interleague games and 3-0 against right-handed starters. The Pirates are 3-1 in home games, 2-0 in home games when the total is 7 or less and 2-3 in day games.

Final Analysis
The Pirates are favored on the MLB odds board at -145 while the Tigers are at +135 and the total is set at 7. Jordan Zimmermann shined in his season opener with the Tigers and we all know how talented Gerrit Cole is and it's only a matter of time before he returns to form and takes his place as the team's ace and this a great opportunity for him to get back on track, at home. Also keep in mind that Pittsburgh is struggling a bit offensively. I'm taking 'Under' 7 with my MLB picks.
