Sports handicapper Ian Cameron provides his MLB Early Lines Report for the games taking place on Tuesday, August 9.

Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals
This is a starting pitching rematch from last week when these same two teams and starters met in Cincinnati. Brandon Finnegan faced Mike Leake and the Reds won 7-0 in that game. I expect both teams to get in on the act in terms of scoring here. Finnegan surprisingly shut down the Cardinals in that outing last week but he will be challenged to duplicate that here at Busch Stadium. Finnegan has a 4.60 ERA on the road and allowing 4 runs in 5 innings in his lone previous outing here in St. Louis earlier this season. Finnegan’s advanced stats paint a picture of someone who can’t sustain his last two shutout performances as his FIP and xFIP are at 5.52 and 5.08 respectively to go along with an average at best 8.9% swinging strike rate.

I expect the Cardinals to make their adjustments and perform a lot better against Finnegan as they face him for the second time in a one-week span. Mike Leake will be on the mound for St. Louis against his former team and it has been a very rough stretch for Leake who has been crushed in his last three starts surrendering 20 runs on 27 hits in his last 16 innings of work and his former Cincinnati Reds team have hammered Leake to the tune of 13 runs on 18 hits in 11.1 innings over a span of two starts against the Reds. Neither bullpen is trustworthy to put up zeroes in the latter stages so the door should be open for late runs from both squads as well. The Over is 6-3-1 in Leake’s 9 home starts this season and I expect that trend to continue here so over is my MLB pick with MLB odds at 8.5 -118 at Heritage.
