Today for our upset in major league baseball we have a surprising underdog in the Detroit Tigers. This game has a pretty solid pitching matchup but the value is with the Tigers so I am going to back them in this spot.

MLB odds makers have come out with the Detroit Tigers at around +125. At Pinnacle you get that +126 which I think is pretty good value on a good baseball team with a very good pitcher on the mound. I'm still scratching my head a little bit about the odds on this game.

Pitching Matchup
Justin Verlander gets the call for the Detroit Tigers and comes in with a 6.17 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in only two outings this season so far. He had a rough game against the New York Yankees allowing six earned runs and 10 hits in six innings. But he has 10 years under his belt as a major league pitcher and I look for him to bounce back in this spot. Career wise he has a 3.54 ERA and 1.21 WHIP and has been one of the best pitchers of this past decade. Carlos Carrasco gets the start for the Cleveland Indians and comes in with a 4.35 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, but at home he is not been sharp with a 5.06 ERA. Recently he has been less than stellar allowing 11 earned runs in his last three games in only 15 innings. In that time span he also allowed 24 hits. He is a pretty good major league pitcher but so far this year against the Tigers he has allowed eight earned runs in only 10 innings pitched for an ERA of 7.20.

Detroit ranks 11th in the league in runs scored per game while the Indians are ranked 21st, they both have pretty good hitting teams. Overall though the Tigers out rank the Indians in almost every offensive category. The Tigers ranked first in hits per game at almost 9.5 while the Indians are ranked 19th at 8.4 per game. Also, the Tigers are hitting .274 as a team which is good enough for second in the major leagues compared to the Indians ranked 17th batting .250. Finally, in on base plus slugging percentage the Tigers ranked fourth in the major leagues and the Indians 17th. Up and down offensively the Tigers are the better hitting team.

It is pretty easy to see the Tigers are the better hitting team and are just ahead of the Indians in the American League Central division. They should be a great matchup between these two teams as they continue to battle for playoff hopes. My assumption is this line is reflecting the fact that Verlander is coming back from an injury. Although it might be tempting to take the Indians in this spot, I will not bite and gladly back the Tigers getting the plus money, back them with confidence.
