This MLB betting preview of tonight's AL match-up between Royals and Athletics fights back against the reluctant betting markets by endorsing Kansas City.

Kansas City Royals vs. Oakland Athletics

Kansas City Royals
A quick look at the MLB odds boards is enough to confirm that the betting markets remain astonishingly reluctant to accept and endorse this Kansas City Royals team. Despite being B2B American League champions and a defending World Series champion, we are still being offered tremendous betting value and bargain rates to support this team. The analytics community continues to believe this team will regress in 2016 which explains why we’ve consistently seen Kansas City being bet against including in this game tonight as the Royals opened as the favorite but now the Athletics are favored in this matchup. That group of bettors thought Kansas City would decline last season and it didn’t happen and right now, the Royals are offering up no evidence of a decline this season either.

Kansas City has sprinted out of the gate to a 7-2 start which includes an impressive showing in Houston where they took 3 out of 4 games against the Astros at Minute Maid Park and that was against an Astros team that was licking their chops to get another shot at the Royals for the first time since last year’s bitter series loss to them in the ALDS. Kansas City will send Edinson Volquez to the mound tonight and he has had a solid start to his season allowing just 2 runs in 11.2 innings of work over a pair of starts against the NY Mets and Minnesota along with a rock solid 15-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio and KC won both of those games. Volquez dominated Oakland in his lone start against them last season in this ballpark tossing 7 innings and yielding only a single run on 3 hits in a Royals 5-2 win.

Oakland Athletics
Oakland’s lineup is not prolific at all and the Athletics offense has struggled most of the season and they enter this series off being swept by the LA Angels and scoring just 6 runs in those 3 games combined. Oakland veteran lefty Rich Hill will get the starting pitching assignment tonight and he’s a decent hurler at this stage of his career but certainly not a pitcher that a patient and crafty Royals lineup will fear. Kansas City has only faced a lefty starter once this season but they fared extremely well as they beat up on Minnesota southpaw Tommy Milone scoring 4 runs in just 4.2 innings against him and for the season, the Royals are batting .289 as a team and averaging 6.97 runs per game against lefties. If this game is close in the late innings, I’ll give Kansas City’s defense and lockdown bullpen the edge over just about every other team in Major League Baseball including Oakland.

I think the wrong team is favored here as Kansas City is the much better all around, complete baseball team and catching a slight underdog price with the Royals tonight is an absolute bargain. There is potential that Royals 3B Mike Moustakas may not play tonight due to a hamstring injury tonight but that isn’t enough to get me to back off the Royals side of this game at a cheap price. Below is a great price to endorse the Royals as your MLB picks for this game. If you're still reluctant to back Kansas City on this game, go ahead and take a look at a fellow capper's take on this same game.
