I'm confidently betting over the MLB odds total when the Houston Astros taking on the Athletics in Oakland. Decent hitting teams against two subpar pitchers means we should see plenty of runs scored today.
MLB Odds for Astros vs. Athletics
This line opened up at 7.5 and has moved at some places to 8 already. You might want to grab this over the total early, but if this trend continues there should be some good value on getting that number at either some plus money or really low juice. Right now the best odds I have is at Bookmaker sports book with over the total of 8 at +100.
For the Astros veteran Scott Feldman takes the mound with a 4.58 ERA, 1.33 whip, 44 strikeouts, and a 4-5 record. Career wise we see just about the same with a 4.48 ERA and 1.36 whip. He has been pretty decent in his last 10 starts but he still is a guy that consistently gives up runs, surprisingly he has a very good road ERA of 3.24. This a be the second time though that Oakland has seen him in Oakland and last time out they scored three runs off him in six innings, look for them to do even better today.
The Astros have been one of the better teams in the league offensively ranking fourth in runs scored per game at 4.49, sixth in OPS at .742, but as mentioned in previous articles a pretty low team batting average of .246 ranking them 25th in all the major leagues. Still, they are first in home runs per game and have a lot of pop and that lineup so look for them to do some damage against the Athletics rookie starter.
Rookie Aaron Brooks takes the mound with a 3.09 ERA, 0.94 whip, eight strikeouts, and no official record. The rookie has only made three major league appearances, two with the Royals before he got picked up by Oakland. He was pretty solid in his previous start against Cleveland allowing just one earned run in seven innings, but career wise in the minor leagues he compiled a 4.21 ERA and a 1.30 whip. This might be a good chance for him to shine against the AL West leading Astros, but like Feldman I don't expect for him to hold down a hard-hitting Houston team.
On the offensive side Oakland is a middle tiered ranked team averaging 4.13 runs per game ranking them 15th, an OPS of .692 ranking them 23rd, and a team batting average of .250 which goes up to .255 at home. They have been a little bit of a slump recently but against the guy like Feldman I expect him to have some good quality at-bats today and push across between three and five runs.
As far as the AL West goes this is an extremely important series. As far as parks go the Coliseum in Oakland is one of the more difficult hitters parks ranking 20th this season and Park Factors. But with the pitching matchup against two decent to good hitting teams I am eager to make my MLB pick for this game to go over the total.
