San Diego has locked up a playoff spot, and the only question is who the Padres will face come Friday. Their results against the San Francisco Giants will help determine an answer. Here are our Giants-Padres same-game parlay picks for Tuesday.

The Padres hold a one-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies for the No. 5 seed in the NL. But the club that earns the seed will face an indisputably tougher path to the World Series. It begs the question: Why try to beat the Giants at all on Tuesday?

Here are my same-game parlay picks for Tuesday’s Giants-Padres matchup (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook; Pick confidence is based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Giants ML (+132) ★★★

The Padres have been the superior team in 2022, but the circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s game should shift the edge in favor of San Francisco.

Life for Padres starter Sean Manaea has been rough since the beginning of August, a period when he's posted a 7.50 ERA. He’s unlikely to get a role in the team's playoff rotation with those numbers. San Diego could ask him to eat some innings Tuesday without concern for how that impacts his wild-card series availability.

On the other side, the Giants could be inclined to let Carlos Rodon go as deep as he can in hopes of boosting his Cy Young Award chances. He's earned an opportunity to lead the league in strikeouts, and a good outing Tuesday could push Rodon into the NL’s top five in ERA. With nothing left to play for now, the Giants should keep Rodon out there against a lineup that features the worst OPS among postseason qualifiers in 2022.

Padres closer Josh Hader was called upon to put out the fire that reliever Tim Hill started on Monday night, leading to another potential advantage for the Giants. Hader may not be pressed into action Tuesday due to a likely desire to keep him fresh for the games that matter over the weekend.

Rodon Over 5.5 strikeouts (-140) ★★★★

Though there’s a chance the Giants ease off Rodon on Tuesday just to keep the star pitcher healthy heading into the offseason, there’s really no incentive to do so since he can opt out of his contract and become a free agent this winter. Rodon likely prefers the chance to bolster his stats in any way possible.

If Gabe Kapler gives him that opportunity on Tuesday, the Over on this strikeout total feels like a no-brainer. Rodon’s 237 strikeouts put him one behind Corbin Burnes for the league lead. His 11.98 K/9 is tops in the NL. Rodon has cleared this total in each of his past five starts, and eight of the veteran's previous nine.

The southpaw has also cleared this line in two of his three starts against San Diego in 2022. Though the Padres rank fairly respectably among MLB teams in strikeout average, they still strike out over eight times per game.

Over 7.5 (-105) ★★★

Manaea has allowed 10 runs across 17 innings over two starts against San Francisco. While those outings didn’t include any major blowups, the Giants' offense was consistently able to put runners on bases against Manaea.

His recent numbers suggest San Francisco should be able to produce some pretty good at-bats on Tuesday night. Combine that with Hader potentially being unavailable, and the Padres could be turning to a weakened bullpen in relief of Manaea, even in a leading situation.

Though Rodon should post a quality outing, he allowed five runs in four innings the last time the lefty faced this lineup in late August. Behind Rodon, the Giants will look to hold down the Padres with the 20th-ranked bullpen ERA (4.08) in MLB. Overall, the Over has hit during 10 of the 17 Giants-Padres games in 2022.
