Miami Marlins vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Miami will look to take the final game of this home-and-home series against Tampa Bay on Thursday and should have a solid chance to do so behind their ace Jose Fernandez who has been rolling of late with a sparkling 0.90 ERA in his last three starts allowing 2 runs in his last 20 innings pitched. Miami is 7-2 in his 9 starts overall and Fernandez held the Rays to 2 runs in his lone start against them last season. On the flip side, Tampa Bay lefty Drew Smyly will get the call and he has been a bit wobbly of late especially from a control and command standpoint as he’s issued 6 walks in his last 11 innings and has allowed 10 runs over 16.1 innings in his last three starts along with 4 home runs. Tampa Bay is just 1-3 with Smyly on the mound in his 4 home starts at Tropicana Field this season and the Marlins have been a profitable team away from home entering this game with a rock solid 13-9 road record this season. Miami at a near even money price is the MLB pick I will back in this game.

Colorado Rockies vs. Boston Red Sox
I’ve spoke highly of Jonathan Gray on multiple occasions as I think he has potential to be an ace for this Colorado Rockies pitching staff but right now he is a young arm that is still tyring to establish himself and specifically become more consistent at the Major League level and he’s struggled at times despite flashes of brilliance. This is a tough matchup even for a strong arm like his that has a ton of upside as he heads to Fenway Park to face one of the most potent lineups in baseball right now with the Boston Red Sox crushing the baseball for the better part of the last few weeks especially at home and Gray was hammered hard by St. Louis in his last start allowing 9 runs in 3.1 innings of work.

However, Clay Buchholz is just not a pitcher I have any interest in supporting as he’s had a very rough season entering this game with a 5.66 ERA at Fenway Park and has allowed 13 runs in his last 17 innings of work and should be a cure for this ailing Rockies lineup which has scuffled at the plate in recent games. I still prefer Gray despite some growing pains as a young starter over Buchholz so I’ll recommend taking a shot with Colorado at the big underdog price and also for this game to find its way up and Over the total of 9.5 runs on the MLB odds board.
