As we hit the last few days of August, sports betting in general is hitting center stage as NCAA Football has begun and the NFL is a week away. That said, its MLB time and I see some really good betting picks on the board.

Capper Catalano’s Record
183-159 -18.39 Units

We made a decent profit yesterday as C.J. Wilson and the Los Angeles Angels proved that they’re the best team in the majors as we hit with a 2-unit play and we lost with the Kansas City Royals as a 1-Unit play as the Minnesota Twins layed a beating on the division leading Royals; big surprise there.

Detroit Tigers (72-60) vs. Chicago White Sox (60-73)
Verlander Time?
Maybe if I say it enough times, Justin Verlander (11-11, 4.82) will provide a solid outing because he’s totally fallen off the map and at the wrong time.

Players don’t feel that urgency to perform well once they sign a big contract and meet a model and I really think that this is the case for Verlander. He was once thought of as the best pitcher in the American League and now the Tigers are looking for just one good start out of him.

Detroit trails the Kansas City Royals by 1.5 games in an American League Central Division that is up for grabs. The Royals got crushed by the Twins last night and quite frankly, the Tigers are a much better team than K.C.

In the month of August, Verlander has pitched to a 4.98 ERA and that simply won’t cut it against good teams, especially when Miguel Cabrera appears to be a different player.

Where’s Miggy?
The batting average is there at .304 and he has 90 runs batted in on the season, but this certainly isn’t the Miguel Cabrera that has ruled baseball over the last half decade. Cabrera has just 17 home runs on the season and has looked lost at the plate lately. Either there’s a confidence issue or is there a possible cut down around the league on PED usage? Nonetheless, this is a good spot for a deep Tigers offense which is coming off of a well battled victory over the Yankees on Thursday. While Jose Abreu has taken the Major Leagues by storm and will win AL Rookie of the Year, he’s can’t win a game by himself and this game favor’s Detroit.

Oakland Athletics (78-55) vs. Los Angeles Angels (80-53)
Jon Lester To the Rescue
After another loss to the Halos, the Oakland Athletics are starting to lose that dominance that they’ve had for most of the season, crushing teams by large margains and dominating the runs scored/runs allowed comparison. Instead, it’s the Los Angeles Angels who have taken over the MLB by storm and just continue to win despite that fact that their ace, Garrett Richards, will be out for the season.

The Angels lead by 2 games and these games have a 2 game swing. Jon Lester has been brilliant since joining the A’s and he will need to put forth a strong effort as Jered Weaver takes the mound for the Halos.

Lester made a quick recovery after a Sunday night loss to the Atlanta Braves against these same Angels in his last start. He allowed just 1 run and 5 hits while striking out 9 batters. That’s an amazing feat considering he’s facing the likes of Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Josh Hamilton. When watching Lester on the mound, he looks super-confident and ready to win another World Series.

From an Angels perspective, injuries have been the major theme for this squad and they’ve still been able to win. Jered Weaver hasn’t suffered any injuries this season, but he’s just not the same pitcher anymore with the same velocity on his pitches after last season’s injury.

In his prime, Weaver would blow Lester and the A’s away, but this is a different Jered Weaver. Despite the lack of intimidation, Weaver has still been effective with a record of 14-7 and with a 3.72 ERA this season.

This is a huge game for Oakland and I expect Lester and the Oakland offense to come strong in this game. Choose the A’s as your MLB pick.
