Our MLB handicapper is riding an 8-4-2 ATS streak coming into Friday night where he spots one of the best plays of the year. Read on as he explains why it is safe to let it fly on the Nationals Friday night as he makes his MLB Picks of the Day.

Our MLB handicapper successfully faded the Mariners as the Rockies avoided the sweep yesterday in Seattle. As the Tampa Bay Rays come into town recent events swing the odds in the road team’s favor.

The Mariners are currently a snake-bitten baseball team. They just got their best starter back in James Paxton, who pitched them to victory on Thursday night, just to see two of their best offensive players go down in Jean Segura and Nelson Cruz on Thursday afternoon. Segura rolled his ankle sliding into 2nd base and Cruz was hit by a pitch in the hand. Neither will be 100% on Friday even if they do play, but I am willing to bet on the other side that they will be held out for precautionary reasons.

Christian Bergman starts this game for the Mariners and he has been hot and cold since joining the rotation. He followed up a 10-run, 4-inning, clunker against Washington with pitching 7 innings of shutout ball against the Red Sox on Sunday. His true talent is somewhere in the middle of course, but he may have to be perfect with the compromised Seattle lineup backing him up. He’s allowing a .344 batting average against right-handers this year, so I expect the Rays will be able to figure him out for a few runs. I’m taking the Rays against the short-handed M’s here as one of my Friday MLB Picks of the Day.

Washington Nationals vs. Oakland Athletics

There are some deep state issues with one of the best pitchers in the Oakland rotation right now. Read on as our MLB handicapper points out the problems as he comes in with one of his strongest angles of the year.

Andrew Triggs has been great so far this year for the Athletics, but something has gone horribly wrong with him over his last three starts. He’s lost two of them while getting a no-decision in the other. The huge red flag is Triggs’ velocity, which has suddenly dropped 2mph on his fastball and now comes in at 88mph. He only throws it a third of the time, but it is getting crushed when he does throw it. It’s also an indication that he is trying to pitch through an injury.

Whatever the issue is with Triggs he absolutely cannot be trusted to succeed against the Nationals in this game. Stephen Strasburg and his 2.46 FIP can be trusted, however. Allowing a paltry .210 batting average on the season, Strasburg is carrying a 6-1 record and his peripheral stats all point to dominance. While we are still getting value with a little-known issue with Triggs velocity, I’m using this chance to lay heavy on the Nationals' moneyline on Friday.
