We have some interesting MLB matchups for Friday, headlined by a pitching duel between “King” Felix Hernandez vs. Jeff Samardzija. Let’s take a look at today’s slate of games and find the best way to profit.

Joe C. Record
124-117 -24.93 Units

I pretty much did an “all in” on Thursday with my sports picks and took Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers over the lowly San Diego Padres and was lucky to come out with the victory. On the other hand, the Yankees fell apart against the Tribe and with the news about Masahiro Tanaka’s injury, I’m not surprised why. It seems like this is the year for Tommy John surgeries. In all, the 2- unit play with L.A. made us a profit for the day of 1 Unit.

I must admit, almost every matchup on the board seems like a tough one; no two star plays today.

Oakland Athletics (58-34) at Seattle Mariners (49-43)
Matchup of the Day
This isn’t a matchup regarding the teams as much as the starting pitching as Oakland has the far superior team. Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 1.29) has finally picked up some run support as he goes from one of the worst offensive teams majors in the Chicago Cubs to one of the better offensive teams in the Oakland Athletics.

In a way, Felix Hernandez (10-2 ,2.11) can definitely relate to Samardzija as he’s been on some really lousy Seattle Mariners teams. I can recall him winning a Cy Young Award with a losing record one season. This season, Hernandez doesn’t have that problem as he’s on one of the better Seattle teams that we have seen in years.

In 18 starts this season, Hernandez has allowed 2 or less runs in 15 of them. He’s held the opposing team to a .201 batting average collectively. Although both teams have offensive threats such as Robinson Cano, Josh Donaldson, Kyle Seager, and Brandon Moss, this game has under the total written all over it in a pitcher’s duel. The only problem is that the betting total is very low at just 6 runs. That said, the quality of pitching is so high in this game that we’re going to bet the under regardless of the low betting total.

Minnesota Twins (42-49) at Colorado Rockies (39-53)
Hello Coors Field!
Coors Field has been very good to me. Whenever there has been a pitcher on the road team who wasn’t an ace, I’ve taken over the betting total no matter how high it was listed and I’ve been very successful using that method.

Tonight the total for the game is 10.5 runs and Minnesota starts a very inexperienced pitcher in Kris Johnson. This would be another over the total play, but the only thing that concerns me is the lack of firepower on the Minnesota team.

The Twins are hosting the 2014 All-Star Game and each team needs in the MLB  needs at least one representative from their ball club and Minnesota is having a very difficult time in naming someone. They’ve had to stoop so low as to consider Kurt Suzuki (2 HR, 35, .307). No offense to Suzuki, who has had a very good season, this is a team that lacks starpower and power in general. Minnesota is hoping that a trip to Coors Field is the cure for their offensive woes. Are the betting oddsmakers expecting the same?

Cargo Is Back
Although he’s had a disappointing season, Carlos Gonzalez is one of the stars of this Rockies squad. They get into high scoring affairs , but usually come out on the losing end of them. Hopefully for Colorado, the return of Gonzalez will give their team a jolt and start putting some “W’s” in the win column.

I’m going to stick with what has worked for me and take the over. Minnesota does have some capable hitters in Brian Dozier, Josh Willingham and Chris Parmalee. Look for a high-scoring game when making your baseball pick today.
