The Giants and Phillies both come into this contest today with losing records. We are going to take a look at the total in this matchup and see if there’s value in backing the over or the under, taking into consideration the low offensive statistics from both teams.

San Francisco Giants

Ty Blach will get the start for San Francisco and he comes in with a 3.83 ERA along with a solid 1.18 whip. On the season he has really only had one bad outing which was at Cincinnati where he got crushed for eight earned runs in just three innings. Outside of that though, he has been rather steady giving up just eight earned runs in his last four games spanning 28 innings of work. Because of those recent outings, I like for him to come in today and be efficient enough to keep Philadelphia from putting up a lot of runs.

At the plat,e San Francisco has been one of the worst offensive teams in all of baseball ranking dead last in runs per game, total bases, and OPS. They also rank second to last hitting just .228 as a team. I’m not really sure what the issue is with this ballclub because I but do believe they are a little bit better than their offensive statistics are showing. Still, until they actually start putting up some runs I am hard-pressed to believe they will put up their share of runs.

Philadelphia Phillies

Jerad Eickoff takes the mound for Philadelphia and comes in with a 4.74 ERA and 1.46 whip which is quite a bit above his career 3.68 ERA and 1.20 whip. He has not pitched particularly well over his last several starts but on closer look, he has faced some of the tougher hitting teams in baseball not just recently but in all of his games this season. Because the Giants are so lackluster on the offensive end I expect him to come in and get a quality start.

Philadelphia started out the year really well on the offensive side of the ball but statistically across the board they rank in the bottom five in the league in some of the most important categories. Currently, the Phillies rank 25th in both total bases and OPS as well as 26th averaging just 4.02 runs per game. Like San Francisco, I just don’t see them putting up a lot of runs in this contest.

Oddsmakers have set this total for the game at 8.5 runs and for my MLB pick, I’m to back the under. I simply think this is just too many runs for these two teams to get today and I like for both pitchers to throw well enough to put plenty of zeros on the board.
