Afternoon contests out west are on our Hump Day docket, one that looks like a slugfest and the other more of a pitching duel. How will we play the MLB odds totals in both matchups?

Yanks & Rocks Wrap Up Short Set At Coors
I
t's getaway day in Denver where the Colorado Rockies and New York Yankees complete their mini-series, thermometers are expected to rise into the mid-90s with the wind blowing out and we have a couple of pitchers prone to the long ball on the hill. Sounds like a perfect recipe for an 'over' play, right?

As Lee Corso might say, "Not so fast, my friends." All of those ingredients are indeed in place for the 3:10 PM (ET) first pitch at Coors Field where Ivan Nova goes for the Yankees against Colorado's Chad Bettis. It opened basically a pick 'em on the moneyline, the MLB odds initially at 11½ before quickly skipping up to 12.

The teams started this series Tuesday with the Yanks slight favorites and the total dipping from 11 to 10½. The six played between the teams at this park were 'under' winners, Colorado winning four of last six in Denver (2010, '13).

Nova is making his eighth consecutive start for New York after starting the season in the 'pen.  Thanks to his offense, the Dominican has wins the last two times out despite allowing eight runs in a little more than 12 innings, opponents slapping three out of the park in those outings. He's been far less effective on the road (6.57 ERA) than at home (2.64). Nova's only experience against the Rockies came at the Bronx in an '01 star where the righthander took a no-decision allowing four runs in six innings, Colorado cracking three long balls.

Bettis has been in Walt Weiss's rotation from the get-go, but recent shellings has put his hold on a starter's job. It hasn't mattered where the former Texas Tech star has pitched or how potent the lineup his last four times out, surrendering 22 runs (21 earned) in a combined 16.1 innings. Opponents have banged six homers in that span as Bettis prepares to face the Yankees for the first time in his career.

It is going to be a hot day by Denver standards with the high reaching the mid-90s perhaps, the air dry and a 12-15 mph southerly blow (out to center). I'm still riding series trends with my free MLB pick on the low side of the total.

Kershaw Takes Turn For LA Against D-Backs
About a half-hour later and nearly 750 miles south of Denver, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks finish up the second of their six meetings for 2016. The 3:40 PM (ET) contest features a pair of southpaws, one of them 3-time Cy Young winner and former NL MVP Clayton Kershaw who will be opposed by Arizona's Patrick Corbin.

As you'd expect, MLB odds for the affair have Kershaw and LA as pronounced chalk in the low-mid -200's. We're primarily interested in the total which is 7-7½ at vasrious shops.

Former Dodger Zack Greinke helped the D-Backs to a 3-2 triumph in Monday's opener, the fourth consecutive 'under' in this year's meetings. The clubs went into Tuesday's tilt with LA a -150 favorite and 9 for the total.

Kershaw didn't face the Diamondbacks when the clubs gathered in LA back in April, and he has struggled against them the last few years on this diamond going 1-3 in four starts with a 5.79 ERA. It has been no struggle for the Dallas native this season, however, helping the Dodgers to eight consecutive wins with an ERA below 1.00 since the end of April. Corbin pitched well at Chavez Ravine in April, the Snakes taking a 4-2 decision thanks in part to his six innings of 1-run baseball. His home performances this season have left a lot to be desired, a 7.59 ERA a big reason Arizona is winless in those six assignments.

Expected plate umpire Sam Holbrook is showing no real leans this season at 4-5-2 O/U/P, and this is his first plate assignment in Phoenix since 2012. With the temperature expected to soar into triple digits, we're expecting the lid to be closed at Chase Field. On Wacky Wednesday, I'm going 'over' for my free MLB pick.
