After a shorter slate of MLB action on Monday, and with the NBA finally, over, I am shifting my focus over to MLB, where there are always valuable props to bet on.
Jose Fernandez O/U 8.5 strikeouts
Jose Fernandez has been simply fantastic this season, and he has done a lot of his work against right-handed hitters. Even though the Braves have a lineup with a majority of lefties, they have still not hit right-handed pitching well this season. The Braves have a weighted on base percentage of only .287, which is third worst in the MLB. While they don’t strikeout as much against righties, Fernandez is not your average right-handed pitcher.
He might be the best right-handed strikeout pitcher in the game, if not top three. Injuries have hampered his career as of late, but it looks as if the team is getting more comfortable with him pitching later into the game. In his last seven starts Fernandez has pitched into the seventh inning in five of them, and he ha struck out at leas nine batters in five of them as well.
The Braves present little problems tonight, especially in Miami in one of the more friendly pitchers parks in the country. This season, Fernandez owns a strikeout rate of 37.5 percent, so assuming he gets another seven or more innings in this one, he is bound to have nine or more strikeouts against the Braves. MLB Pick: OVER 8.5 (-115)
Chris Sale O/U 6.5 strikeouts
Some late breaking news for the lineups of this game make this prop stand out in more ways than one. Chris Sale is on the hill against the Boston Red Sox tonight, and a couple of heavy hitters who are tough to get out are not in the lineup. David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia are both absent from the lineup against Sale. They only have two lefties in the order tonight with Travis Shaw and Jackie Bradley, but Sale has been dominant this season, and his strikeout totals are starting to rise.
He has at least seven strikeouts in five of his last six starts, and while he hasn’t pitched deep into games lately, the Red Sox’ lineup today is full of potential strikeouts. Both Bradley and Shaw should be good for rat least one or two strikeouts for Sale, and with the bottom half the Sox’ order looking less than opposing, Sale should have no issues getting seven or more strikeouts in this one.
Sale owns a strikeout rate of just 24 percent this season, which is far lower than his previous years of 30.1 percent in 2014 and 32.1 percent last season, but as I stated above, his strikeout totals have been going up lately, so hopefully the Red Sox are swinging and missing a lot tonight with the southpaw on the hill. Take the over and add it to your MLB Picks tonight!
MLB Pick: OVER 6.5
