AL East-leading New York shoots for a sweep of a series in Seattle. Do we pick Masahiro Tanaka in his first start off the DL? Or can Taijuan Walker come up with another outing like his last?
Yanks-Mariners Wednesday Betting Odds
Wednesday's MLB betting odds opened New York and Masahiro Tanaka at around -115 over Seattle and Taijuan Walker, with a total of seven runs. In the early betting many books bumped the Yankees to the -120/-125 range.
New York could also be found getting +135 giving the 1.5 runs on the run line.
The Yankees have taken the first two games of this series, beating Felix Hernandez Monday 7-2, then coming from behind for a 5-3 extra-inning victory Tuesday. New York tied Tuesday's game with two outs in the top of the ninth, then won it on Garrett Jones' three-run homer in the eleventh.
So the Yankees have won six of their last nine games, while Seattle has lost four in a row.
The Mariners have also been held to three runs or fewer each of their last seven games.
Walker (2-5, 6.18) is just three-for-10 on quality starts this season, but is coming off his best outing so far, after throwing eight innings of two-hit, shutout ball against Cleveland last week. But in his two starts previous to that he allowed eight runs over 9 1/3 innings. Seattle is only 3-7 in Walker's starts this season.
This will be Walker's first-ever start against the Yankees.
Tanaka (2-1, 3.22) will come off the DL to make his first start in six weeks. Before he tweaked his forearm Tanaka went two-for-four on quality starts, and New York went 3-1 in his starts.
In his one career start against Seattle, last June, Tanaka allowed just two runs and six hits through nine innings of a 4-2 Yankees victory, walking one while whiffing 11.
Wednesday's Batting Splits
New York ranks 10th in the Majors this season with a .732 team OPS against right-handed pitching, while Seattle ranks 23rd against righties with a .674 OPS.
Wednesday's Free Picks
Tanaka will be on a pitch count today, but he still gets the nod over the inconsistent Walker in the pitching match-up. The Yanks also own edges with the sticks and in the bullpen. We like New York as our MLB pick and sure expect they'll complete the sweep. Also, games played at Safeco Field this season are 15-11 on the UNDERS, and the Mariners are having trouble scoring. So we're thinking UNDER.
