Do We Bet the Over?
According to Bet 365 Sportsbook, the Tigers are a -139 favorite on the MLB odds board and the total for the game is a mere 6.5 runs.
This can be due to Max Scherzer who was a 20 game winner last season. Although Scherzer has been sharp, 6.5 runs seems a bit low. Let’s take and in-depth look at the matchup.
New Look Tigers
The Tigers are coming off of a solid 6-2 win over the Padres in which Justin Verlander pitched 7 innings while allowing just 2 runs.
It was a much needed solid outing for Verlander who also picked up his 1st 2 hit game in the majors. The Tigers also received a good amount of production from their newly formed top of the lineup in which Rajai Davis and Ian Kinsler went a combined 4 for 8 with 5 runs scored.
The combination of Kinsler and Davis are both hitting over .300 for the season while Austin Jackson, who has dropped down to the number 5 spot in the order without Prince Fielder,is also holding his own, hitting .314. The only problem now for Detroit is waiting for their superstar Miguel Cabrera to explode.
It’s early, but Miguel Cabrera has gotten off to a very slow start. This former triple- crown winner is hitting just .250 with 1 HR and 4 RBI. The Tigers need Cabrera’s power as Prince Fielder is now a Texas Ranger and the Detroit lineup lacks some real pop.
With players like Torii Hunter, Ian Kinsler, and Austin Jackson, they have a lot of good contact hitters, but are in desperate need of some power.
It’s just a matter of time before Cabrera starts to hit. The Tigers rank just 25th in runs in the majors and Torii Hunter (3 HR, 9 RBI) has carried this team in the power department. Look for Cabrera to possibly get on track this afternoon as Tyson Ross is no match for the slugger.
Ranking 29th in runs, 23rd in batting average (.231), 29th in on-base% (.273), and 27th in slugging% (.337), the San Diego Padres look to be headed for another losing season. They simply don’t have the pitching to make up for their lack of hitting.
This is a team that needs to increase their payroll and make some off season moves or they’ll never be a winner. Teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates have done so in the past. This comes down to their management and desire to win.
The Padres have been forced to rely on the top of their order in the form of Everth Cabrera . As a leadoff hitter, Cabrera has had few opportunities to drive anyone in, but has gotten off to a fast start, going 16 for 45 (.356) in 1st 11 games of the season.
The Padres will need to rely on the hitting of Cabrera, Chris Denorfia, and Yasmani Grandal while Jedd Gyorko and Seth Smith are still trying to get on track. Max Scherzer should be able to tear this lineup apart.
The Tigers need Cabrera to get out of his early season funk, but they’re the far superior team in this game from top to bottom where hitting and pitching are concerned. Look for Detroit to crush San Diego for our baseball picks.
