Can the Texas Rangers recover from a 17-5 lambasting last night at the hands of the Boston Red Sox? We shall see. A starting pitching matchup of Ogando (4-2, 3.08) vs. Lackey (3-5, 2.96) might settle things down in Fenway Park.

First pitch is set for tonight at 7:10 pm ET at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. This game can be seen on ESPN 2 network and MLB TV.

The MLB odds makers at Bet365 Sportsbook lists the Red Sox as a -128 betting favorite and the total for the game is 9 runs.

Do we need a “no mercy rule?” The no mercy rule was implemented for teams that have a 10 run lead or more for little leaguers; Just a joke, folks.

Fenway Air Traffic Controllers: Prepare For Takeoff!

We have two of the better offenses in baseball in this game and if last night was an indication of things to come, this could be a 5 hour baseball game.

Boston ripped apart the Rangers defense with 17 runs and 19 hits last night. Most of the offense, with the exception of David Ortiz, came from the unexpected role players on the Red Sox squad.

Dustin Pedroia and Mike Napoli were a combined 1 for 7 and yet the Sox still received this kind of production. The leadoff hitter usually sets the tone and Daniel Nava is having an outstanding season for the division leading BoSox.

Ellsbury Who?

Jacoby Ellsbury has been a fantastic Red Sox in his own right, but injuries have thrown him a bit off track at times. The Red Sox have right fielder Daniel Nava at the leadoff spot and he’s been tearing the cover off of the baseball.

Before this season, Nava was a part-time player that would receive 250 at-bats at most and the veteran 30 year old left-hander has cashed in big this season. Nava is batting .307 with 8 HR and 38 RBI.

In his last night’s game, Nava was 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles and 1 RBI. The only thing that Ellsbury offers that Nava doesn’t is speed on the base path. For now, Nava is having as fantastic a season as is his team.

Test Me!

All across the major leagues, home runs have decreased due to testing for performance enhancement drugs. David Ortiz, a.k.a “Big Papi” had gotten caught up in this “soap opera” and until this day, still denies it. Ortiz’s play on the field is proving that he’s the real deal.

On the season, Big Papi is hitting .333 with 10 HR and 39 RBI. He’s also coming off of a 2 for 6 performance last night in which he had a double, a triple, and 3 RBI’s. Ortiz is not only getting older, he’s sustaining a high level of play and quite frankly, I don’t think that he’s juicing it.

Without Adrian Beltre, Nelson Cruz and Mitch Moreland are the key figures in the Rangers lineup. Both went deep in last night’s game despite the outcome and will be a tough matchup for Red Sox starter, John Lackey.

Veteran A.J. Pierzynski is coming off of a 3 for 4 night and has reached the .300 plateau. Pierzynski has been hot as of late. He’s 13 for his last 29 in his last 9 games and that includes a game in which he pinch hitted. He’s raised his average 43 points in his last 10 games.

We’re not sure if this 36 year old veteran will get the night off, but he could be a factor and Texas will need it against if not the best offense in baseball in the Red Sox.

Rangers are 0-4 in their last 4 road games

Rangers are 9-3 in Ogando’s last 12 starts

Rangers are 11-23 in their last 34 games in which they’re the road underdog

Red Sox are 17-5 in their last 22 games in which they’re a favorite off -110 to -150 odds

Red Sox are 6-2 in their last 8 games as a favorite

Rangers are 10-4 in their last 14 meetings in Boston

Boston is a reasonable -125 favorite and you can’t fade them with your MLB picks given the way that they’re hitting. This team’s offense is clicking and if Lackey gives even a decent performance as I expect him to, Boston will win as the momentum from last night’s game will carry over.
