Orioles fly into Yankee Stadium on Thursday
The Yankees will host the Orioles on Thursday at 7:05 PM ET in the opener of a four game series. According to the MLB Odds at Bookmaker, the Yankees are a -130 money line favorite, and the posted total is 8.5. This will be the second series of the season between these AL East rivals, and the Orioles won two of three from the Yankees at Camden Yards last month.
The Orioles will send veteran right-hander Chris Tillman to the mound on Thursday. Tillman has gone 2-3 in his five team starts this season with a lofty 4.85 ERA. This will be his first start in 2015 versus the Yankees. He made four starts versus the “Bronx Bombers” in 2014 and had a stellar 1.98 ERA. The Orioles have gone an extremely profitable 15-5 as a money line underdog of +100 to +150 when Tillman is their starting pitcher since the start of the 2014 MLB campaign.
Nathan Eovaldi will make his sixth start of the season for the Yankees tonight. After a shaky first two outings, Eovaldi has settled down by going 3-0 in his last three team starts with a solid 3.50 ERA, and an impressive 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio. It must be noted, he’s struggled in his two starts at Yankee Stadium, posting a very lofty 6.52 ERA in those outings, and both of those games went over the total. Eovaldi took the loss in an April start at Camden Yards, allowing two earned runs on eight hits, and walked three in 5.0 innings during a 7-5 Baltimore win.
The Baltimore Orioles enter today having gone under the total in each of their previous five games. They were swept in a short two game series at Citi Field by the Mets before traveling across the bridge to begin tonight’s series with the Yankees. The Orioles have averaged just 2.2 runs and 7.2 hits per game over their previous five outings. On a more positive note, they played errorless baseball over that five game span. Baltimore has gone a disappointing 4-8 on the road to start the year, and is averaging just 3.7 runs per game in doing so.
The New York Yankees are coming off a successful 4-2 road trip which included a three game series sweep at Fenway Park in Boston. They’ve had very odd home and away splits to begin the season, going a very good 11-5 on the road, and just 6-6 at Yankee Stadium. The “Bronx Bombers” enter tonight atop the AL East with a 2.0 game lead over second place Tampa Bay. The pitching has been terrific so far in 2015. They’re allowing opponents just 3.7 runs per game, and the bullpen possesses a terrific 2.19 ERA. The Yankees have gone 7-2 under the total in their last nine games, and committed only a total of only three fielding errors during that time.
Neither one of these teams is exactly ripping the cover of the ball during the past week. Contrarily, both pitching staffs have been rock solid so far in 2015. I’ll have a very small lean toward this game being a low scoring affair for one of my MLB picks on Thursday.
MLB Pick: Play on the Orioles and Yankees to go Under the total of 8.5 at Bookmaker.
