Handicapper Mark Lathrop likes pitching to prevail tonight and picks out two games where those low scores should also provide underdog run line value. Read on as he spots the two matchups with the betting edge.

The Twins have played the Rangers tough the last 3 seasons, picking up a 9-5 SU record through Monday. They enter this game with a pitcher possibly having a breakout season or at least a good month.

Hector Santiago is no stranger to hot starts. His career ERA of 3.31 in April points to that fact, and it continues here as Santiago has a 2.19 ERA through his first 24.2 innings pitched in 2017. All of the peripheral stats are in line and there are no tendencies of luck to be found. No, Hector Santiago is pitching very well right now. I especially like his HR/FB% of 5.6% and sparkly 17/4 K/BB rate coming into this game.

Cole Hamels starts for Texas and he has also been very good in this game, although his BABIP is running nearly .100 points lower than last year. That won’t last long, and neither will his .063 batting average against with left-handers, but it is nice to look at. It’s a tough situation to bet against, but with Minnesota having the Rangers number and Santiago dealing I like their ability to keep it close. I’m taking the Twins +1.5 on the run line, and since both pitchers are hot, Under 8.5 runs as well.

  Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers

The Seattle Mariners are a team that is schizophrenic at the moment, and even with their best pitcher on the mound, there is no way they can be trusted on the road to win by more than one run.

The Mariners lost their feel-good story of their season on Tuesday night, as Mitch Haniger and his .338 batting average were lost for likely a few weeks with an oblique strain. They did get Jean Segura back, who promptly hit a home run in his first return game. But I should stop talking about the offense here, as the Mariners had one of their worst pitching nights in years as they gave up 19 runs to a shorthanded Tigers team.

James Paxton tries to stop the bleeding on Wednesday, but his 5 earned runs given up in his last start proved that he is human. The Tigers counter with Daniel Norris, a left-hander who will be sure to challenge the Mariners .203 batting average and 2.2 run per game average against left-handed starters this year. Detroit is only slightly better with a .207 batting average against lefties such as Paxton – although they have 3.7 runs per game to show for it.

As the blowout started early in the last game, hitters saw a bunch of fastballs as bullpen pitchers tried to eat up innings. It didn’t work well to shorten the game, obviously. I’m expecting a pitching duel here instead as these starters take advantage of the hitter’s aggressiveness from the last game. I’m taking Under 8 (with an expectation that it will shift to 8.5), and also taking Detroit +1.5 runs as two Wednesday MLB Picks.
