Our MLB handicapper spots a game that should be close, and one that should not. Read on as he breaks down his baseball Picks of the Day for Saturday night.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

With Arizona’s surprising start backed by an offense putting up the most runs in the division, it is a bit surprising that they are this big of an underdog against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Our MLB handicapper examines this matchup and makes his pick on how to play this game.

Arizona starts Patrick Corbin in this game against the Dodgers, who hopes to continue his decent start to the 2017 season. After an awesome 14-8, 3.41 ERA performance in 2013, Corbin blew out his elbow and elected to have Tommy John surgery – missing 2014 in the process. His return has been up and down so far but he has always been very good in the early months of seasons, with a career ERA of 3.26 in April and 3.76 in May. He is carrying a 1.80 ERA into this game.

Kenta Maeda of the Dodgers hasn’t been as lucky so far this season, giving up an extreme amount of fly balls so far on the year. Some have left the yard leaving Maeda with an ugly ERA of 6.30 through his first two starts. I’ll spot him the one in Colorado, but he doesn’t get any credit from me in his game against San Diego. With Maeda on the mound against Corbin, Arizona’s hot offense, and capable bullpens so far, I handicap this game more as a tossup. But since it is in Los Angeles, I’m going to take the extra +1.5 runs on the run line and Arizona as one of my Saturday MLB Picks of the Day.

  Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners

It appears that Andrew Cashner is in line to make his first start of the season for the Rangers on Saturday night in Seattle. Unfortunately for him, he draws one of the hottest pitchers in baseball in big lefty, James Paxton.

In 2014 Cashner pulled down a 2.55 ERA, for the Padres, and had excellent metrics across the board such as an insane 6.0% HR/FB rate. Pitching in Petco did him good. Then in 2015, it started to fall apart and in 2016 things got really bad, as he put up a 5.25 ERA and a 5-11 record. Cashner is coming off of biceps tendinitis from spring training, and his last rehab start only had him topping out at 87-89 mph on his fastball.

With Cashner likely on a 90-pitch limit in this return from the DL, the Rangers bullpen will likely come into play. That’s only more good news for the Mariners, as the Rangers bullpen has been bad so far this season in putting up a 6.35 ERA and 17.9% HR/ FB rate.

Enter James Paxton, who has yet to give up a run this season, albeit just over his first two starts and 13 innings pitched. Both of those starts have been against Houston, which frankly has a better lineup than the Rangers right now with Adrian Beltre out. This game should not be in question, so I am willing to spice things up a bit by taking Seattle on the run line.
