Sonny Gray is a slight favorite on the MLB odds to win his 2nd-straight game for the New York Yankees when they wrap up their weekend series at the Boston Red Sox.

So much for ESPN’s suggestion that Boston had locked up the AL East crown with a win in the series opener against New York. The Yankees came right back on Saturday to level the set and take the series to a nationally televised rubber game Sunday afternoon (1:30 PM ET   TBS). The Red Sox send Rick Porcello (7-14, 4.59) to the mound against Sonny Gray (7-7, 3.37) in a virtual pick ‘em, Bookmaker selling New York for -108 with 9½ for the total.

The bottom of Boston’s order provided the punch in Friday’s 9-6 final, win No. 70 for 2017 coming with the Red Sox slight -120 chalk on the MLB odds. Saturday saw the Yankees overcame significant odds and Chris Sale once again with a 4-3 decision. The win left New York 8-6 in the rivalry this year, the totals at Fenway Park 2-6 O/U.

Yanks 3-0 Facing Porcello in ‘17
Gray has posted quality starts all three times since joining the Yankees, yet New York has only managed to win one of them. That came five days ago in the Subway Series sweep, the righty working six and allowing two runs in the 5-4 win in the Bronx. This will be his first taste of this rivalry After Gray beat the Red Sox in Oakland back in May. The Vandy product is 0-1 with an 8,38 ERA in two lifetime starts at Fenway.

Porcello has won all three of his August assignments after losing his final four in July despite pitching pretty well in those contests. The most recent dubya for the 2016 AL Cy Young winner came this past Tuesday at home vs. the Cards, Porcello going seven and allowing three runs in the 10-4 final. He’s facing the Yankees for the third time this year, New York winning each of the previous three games while Porcello pitched to a 3.31 ERA.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Calling balls and strikes on Sunday will be Lance Barksdale, a friend to bettors playing home teams and the ‘under’ this season. Totals have run 6-14 O/U, another three games pushing the marks. Home teams have cashed 15 of his 23 plate assignments (5-1 when on an underdog money line). The 50 year old worked a Porcello home start back in April, one of his few ‘over’ winners with the Red Sox falling to the Rays.

Sunny skies and temps in the low-to-mid 80s is the 02215 forecast this afternoon, a 10-12 WNW wind also in the mix (3B to Pesky Pole). I’m ridint the ‘under’ trend in the Fenway Park matchups for my free baseball pick.

My MLB pick: Yankees-Red Sox Under 9½ (-115) at 5Dimes
Season: 63-64-3 (+1.24)
