Sunday’s MLB slate contains a lot of action-filled matchups with some aces taking the mound and will be concluded by another Red-Sox vs. Yankees battle on Sunday Night Baseball. Time to provide the winning betting picks.

After going 17-3 in our previous 20 games we split on Saturday with the Mets and the Brewers. As I mentioned, it wasn’t an appealing slate of games and to come out virtually even or better was the goal; I’m satisfied.

Pittsburgh Pirates (59-51) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (48-63)
Home Run Harrison
The Pittsburgh Pirates look to win this series as they have taken the last two games from the lowly Arizona Diamondbacks. The D’backs are a notorious poor  team at home and the Pirates have two months to position themselves as they have the post-season in their sights.

This is a team that has relied on the offensive and defensive leadership of MVP Andrew McCutchen, but lately leadoff man, Josh Harrison, has emerged as a blossoming star to set the table in the Pirates lineup.

Harrison has been simply “off the chart” this past week, hitting home runs in 5 out of his last 7 games. Overall, in the last 7 days, Harrison is an eye-popping 14 for 31 with 11 runs scored 4 doubles, 5 HR and 7 RBI. Josh Harrison has been the hottest player in baseball and the Pittsburgh Pirates hope that it continues this afternoon as they face an inferior Diamondbacks club who send Trevor Cahill (1-8, 5.59) to the mound.

Those are certainly not appealing numbers on Cahill’s part and the Pirates offense led by Andrew McCutchen and Josh Harrison, look to expose Cahill’s obvious weaknesses.

From an Arizona standpoint, they will need to get their bats going because Pittsburgh has been scoring at a high rate and making these games high scoring. Paul Goldschmidt is a threat to go deep for the Diamondbacks, but he will need some support from his offense as Pittsburgh starter Francisco Liriano (3-7, 3.97) is starting to heat up.

The betting odds are awful, but Pittsburgh is the only pick in this game at -170.

New York Yankees (56-53) vs. Boston Red Sox (49-61)
Another 4 ½ Hour Marathon?
It doesn’t matter if these teams are in first or last place. There’s usually a lot of chaos in these matchups as these two teams absolutely hate eachother. Boston appears to be complacent in sitting on their 2013 World Series Title, but when the Yankees come to Fenway Park, the Sox seem to step up their game.

After a 6-4 victory by the New York Yankees, these teams play in the rubber match tonight in front of a national television audience. With a starting pitching matchup of David Phelps (5-5, 3.89) vs. Clay Buchholz (5-7, 5.87), this could be a very high scoring game. Buchholz has had some good seasons in the past, but this is one that he would like to forget.

The Yankees definitely have the advantage in pitching as Buchholz has allowed the opposition to hit .299 off of him this season. In his last 3 starts, he’s pitched 17 innings and allowed 16 runs on 23 hits. If he doesn’t step up his game tonight, the hated Bombers will embarrass the Bosox in front of the entire world.

Finally Waking Up
It took Carlos Beltran 4 months of the season, but he’s finally start to show why the Yankees were interesting in signing him and letting guys like Curtis Granderson go.

Beltran is hitting .247 with 13 HR and 40 RBI in 288 at-bats. This is the best that his numbers have looked all season long. Beltran is on a 9 game hitting streak and has had at least 2 hits in each of his last 5 games. Overall, Beltran is 11 for his last 24 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. If he continues to hit like this, the Yankees will move up the standings quite quickly and give Derek Jeter a shot at the post-season in the final year of his storybook career. Take the better team in this game. Take New York at very desirable -102 odds.
