The Yankees send rookie Chad Green to the hill to face off with veteran Jhoulys Chacin and the Angels in Anaheim this afternoon. Our handicapper analyzes if LA will be able to save face today.

New York Yankees (63-59) - Chad Green (2-2, 4.05 ERA)
The Yankees are quietly inching their way back into the American League wild-card picture following their youth movement. Sitting just four games out, they are 7-3 in their last 10 contests. Manager Joe Girardi turns to one of his youngsters this afternoon, Chad Green, aiming for the club's first series sweep in Anaheim in well over a decade.

Green, who posted an eye-catching 1.52 ERA with 100 strikeouts and 21 walks at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year, gave up 15 earned runs through his first four career starts donning the Pinstripes. He finally looked the part in his last outing, striking out 11 and holding the hard-hitting Blue Jays to two hits through six innings. Green became the second rookie in franchise history to sit down 11 and walk zero in the effort.

Since 2011, the UNDER is 14-5-1 when the Yankees visit Angel Stadium. Each club averages 3.6 runs per game, crossing the plate 0.7 runs below an 8.0 closing total. The wager has returned roughly 40 percent to bettors.

New York is 14-9 as road chalk this season. Allowing 4.4 runs per game, it yields just 3.9 in this spot. Girardi's squad is also 8-2 in its last 10 on the road when averaging more runs scored per game than their opponent.

Los Angeles Angels (51-72) - Jhoulys Chacin (3-8, 5.92 ERA)
The Angels are in full-on melt mode, going 2-14 in their last 16 games. They're losing big too with a -3.1 run differential. What's happening? For one, the bats are ice-cold. Tallying 4.7 runs per game prior to the horrid run, they're crossing the plate just 3.1 times a contest since.

Manager Mike Scioscia taps Jhoulys Chacin to rally the troops. Chacin, who came over from the Braves in May to help fill-in an injury-riddled rotation, is not having his best year. He is 2-6 with a 6.10 ERA in an L.A. uniform, the latter ranking fifth highest in the AL for pitchers working 50 innings or more. The Angels are 2-0 as a home dog behind the veteran right-hander, however.

Chacin is 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA in one career start against the Yankees. He's pitched well against the veterans remaining on the current roster, allowing just a .217 batting average (13-for-60) lifetime. Chacin has held Chase Headley (3-for-18), Starlin Castro (4-for-17), Didi Gregorius (1-for-8), and Brian McCann (2-for-10) to a sub-.250 averages in 10 plate appearances or more.

The Angels are 7-15 as home dogs this season. At +123 average MLB odds, fading the AL West representatives has netted bettors nearly 20 percent profit in this spot. Fading them on the point spread has garnered greater cash, going 14-8 at +125 odds for a 40 percent return on one's investment.

Third baseman Yunel Escobar, other former Braves, will sit out with concussion-like symptoms. He ranks second in the AL with a .320 average and ninth with a .368 on-base percentage.

Final Analysis
Chacin has not put in a quality start in his last eight attempts commanding the hill, the Angels allowing 60 runs total during the stretch. In 12 starts for Scioscia, he's held foes to less than three runs three times through the first five innings. The Yankees' bats actually have a pulse lately, the team scoring 5.3 runs per game over their last 10. Chacin could be in for more trouble early on. Green is, well, green, making just his sixth career start. It's been black or white in his first few efforts, but one has to think he carries over momentum and a little confidence after shutting down the Blue Jays last time out. He'll need to keep his slider down to be successful today. We'll take New York with the points through the first five innings at +110 odds for our MLB pick.
