Detroit Tigers (Farmer) vs. LA Angels (Wilson) (-140) 10:05 ET
The Detroit Tigers and LA Angels begin an extended 4-game weekend set Thursday night at Angel Stadium.  It is the first meeting of the year between these teams and the Angels are the ones being favored by the MLB odds tonight. Detroit travels south, after taking the last 2 of a 3-game set from Oakland while the Angels remain at home after losing the final 2 of a 3-game set to San Diego.  But, the advantage of a crafty veteran in Angel starter, Wilson, is a major advantage against an untested rookie in this opening game of the 4-game set.

The Detroit Tigers have been among the most consistent winning teams in baseball the previous 3 seasons with winning totals of 88, 93 and 90 games.  This season’s 28-20 mark, however, leaves them trailing both the Twins and Royals by 1 game for AL Central supremacy.  Not bad, considering that the offense has underachieved with a .701 OPS and the rotation has struggled after trading Scherzer to Washington and placing Verlander on the injured list for the entire season to date.  Though the Tigers enter with a pair of victories over Oakland, they managed just 4 runs in that 3-game set with a .202 BA.  With Lobstein (the replacement for Verlander in the rotation) going on the DL, Detroit is forced to call-up Farmer, who is operating at AAA Toledo.  In a pair of starts in 2014, Farmer posted a 15.63 ERA.  It’s an indication he is not quite ready for prime time.  His work at AAA Toledo was encouraging but not dominating.  In 51 1/3 IP, Farmer posted a 2.98 ERA.

The LAA offense has been one of the biggest mysteries of the MLB season.  For the year to date, they have a .674 offensive OPS (among the worst in the league).  In their previous 5 games, in which they have gone 1-4 vs. Boston and San Diego, the Angels have scored just 12 runs while batting just .228.   At 23-24 and coming off consecutive losses to San Diego at home, the Angels are clearly underachieving the team who is expected to win the West and who had 98 victories last year.  But, we are always eager to back underachieving MLB teams who enter the current contest 1 game under .500.  Clearly, we will have the edge with Wilson on the mound.  Expect a return to form, now that Wilson has returned to his home mound.  In 2 previous road performances, Wilson worked 11 IP allowing 8 runs on 17 hits.  Nonetheless, he has a solid 3.36 ERA for the year with a 1.19 WHIP.  But, he has exceled at home, where dating back to last season, Wilson is 10-2 with a 3.56 ERA in 18 starts.  That includes a pair of starts against Detroit last season in which Wilson spun a 1.98 ERA.  In addition, we must not ignore the fact that in 7 night starts this year, Wilson has a 2.23 ERA.

This is a matchup of two teams who enter this series with an underperforming offense this week.  But the fact the Angels are starting crafty, veteran Wilson on his home mound vs. an untested rookie, gives us a huge advantage in this contest for our MLB picks.
