All eyes are on New York tonight when the Yankees go for a sweep of the Red Sox in a matchup of baseball’s top two teams. Meanwhile on the opposite coast, another key series is set to get underway between the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels.

Fox Sports 1 carries the series opener with a 10:07 PM (ET) first pitch in Anaheim. Jose Berrios (3-3, 3.98) is up next for Minnesota while Garrett Richards (4-1, 3.93) takes the hill for the Halos who are favored on the baseball odds board, money lines ranging from -135 to -145. Playing the scoreboard means making a decision on an 8-run total, most outlets taxing ‘under’ bettors a bit more.

Both Sides Playing Better In May After Rough April Endings

Minnesota had an extra day to get here and rest following a sweep of a 2-game interleague series in St. Louis. The current 5-game win streak has helped cut into a horrible 1-10 stretch to close April, lifting the Twins to just a game behind Cleveland atop the AL Central. The Angels made the short flight home Wednesday following a short interleague matchup of their own in Denver where they split with the Rockies. After closing April 3-9, the Anaheim hardballers are 6-2 to begin May, a half-game back of Houston in the AL West.

Berrios stopped a 2-game slide in Chicago against the White Sox last Friday despite not having one of his better games. Pegged as -155 chalk at Intertops, three of the four runs Berrios allowed over six frames came via the long ball and he has surrendered 13 runs now in his last 13 innings. After being shelled by the Yankees in Anaheim nearly two weeks ago, Richards rebounded with a solid effort in Seattle last Friday, working into the seventh without allowing a run and striking out eight. The former Oklahoma star has been stingy against the Twins during his career, going 2-1 in four starts and a relief outing with a 2.61 ERA (31 IP).

Twins Have Won 5 Of Last 8 In Anaheim

Minnesota has dominated this series of late, winning 5-of-7 last season and 10 of the last 14 going back to 2016. In taking three of the four a little less than 12 months ago at the Big A, the Twins only outscored the Angels by four as the totals split in a tight 8-8½ run range. All three in Anaheim skipped ‘over’ 7½-8½ marks in 2016.

Clear skies, a bit humid with temps in the upper-60s most of the game is the forecast, a light southerly breeze (out to left) also in the mix. Both teams have been hitting well and favor the ‘over’ slightly, so I’ll go that way with my free MLB pick.
