Although this is not a playoff race matchup it has the potential to be the most entertaining game on the board. Find in this betting preview the best way to profit from Rays & White Sox matchup.
Tampa Bay came out at around a +120 underdog as set by MLB odds makers and the line has dropped just a little bit. The best odds out there right now on Tampa Bay is at +115 at 5Dimes. Again, to me this seems like a really even matchup across the board so I will gladly take any kind of plus money on a Tampa Bay team that could easily win this game.
Chris Archer takes the hill for the Tampa Bay Rays and comes in with a 2.54 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. Much like his counterpart today he has dominated the American League for the most part of the season except for a few bad outings here and there. He has a ridiculous 173 strikeouts in just 141 innings and a very solid road ERA of 2.26 with a 0.97 WHIP. In his last 10 starts he is only had two tough outings, one to the Boston Red Sox where he allowed five earned runs and in the other he imploded against the Kansas City Royals allowing nine earned runs in just six innings. Despite those two starts in his last 10 he has been outstanding and in his last three starts he has only allowed three earned runs over 20 innings. I look for him to completely shut down a weak White Sox offense today.
Chris Sale takes the mound for the White Sox with a 3.20 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, and like Archer has had a tremendous year in the American League. These two pitchers matchup really well, and again like Archer, Sale is a strong strikeout pitcher with 177 K's in just 137 innings. Recently though he has been a little bit more pedestrian allowing 13 runs in his last three starts off a surprisingly high 30 hits. Although I don't look for Tampa Bay to have the same amount of success at the plate against him, they should be able to do enough to give Archer the room he needs to win this game.
At the Plate
Neither of these teams rank in the upper part of the league in any major offensive category. The White Sox rank 24th in runs scored per game with Tampa Bay rank 28th, and in OPS Tampa Bay ranks 23rd with the White Sox rank 25th. What is interesting though is a trend in this matchup with the stat in that Tampa Bay averages higher on the road in their runs scored per game and their OPS, and the White Sox averages lower at home in those same two categories. As well, in batting average we see this same type of statistics with the home and away averages of both teams.
With Tampa Bay hitting better on the road than they do at home, and the White Sox hitting worse at home than on the road we get some value today on the underdog. Both pitchers can be lights out which makes this an intriguing matchup, but the value is on the side of Tampa Bay and that is who I'm backing today to pull the minor upset on the plus money line.
