The Dodgers and Cardinals continue to try and chase down the leaders of their respective divisions, and we have a free MLB pick for their Wednesday battle in Los Angeles.

MLB Season Record: 17-31 (-15.41)

Rivals since 1884, very few of their previous 2,000+ meetings were as well pitched as the series opener Tuesday night in Los Angeles between the Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals. It could be the same story this evening with a couple of fine arms on the mound for the 10:10 PM (ET)
matchup Wednesday as Mike Leake hopes to regain the NL ERA lead in a battle with LA’s Rich Hill. The Dodgers are priced -164 at 5Dimes with 7½ for the total.

Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers were -250 on the MLB odds for Tuesday’s series opener, and the LA lefty saw his shot at a complete game shutout disappear with a ninth-inning wild pitch. The Dodgers still won the game, 2-1 in 13 innings, and they won both series in 2016, all six games with 7+ runs scored combined. The ‘over’ had been a winner three of the last four in Los Angeles before last night’s pitching duel.

Hill Takes On Cards For 1st Time Since '08

Leake got the dubya in St. Louis’ only win at Dodger Stadium last year, leaving the former Arizona State star 2-3 with a 3.78 ERA in his last five assignments vs. LA. He’s also coming off his eighth quality start in as many trips to the mound this season, holding the Red Sox to two runs in seven frames last Wednesday only to earn a no-decision as the bullpen faltered and Boston rallied to beat the Cards in 13. Leake is 3-0 on the road this year, but has allowed four homers his last three outings after not serving up any in his first five efforts.

Hill is pitching on eight days of rest after he was pushed back earlier this week to keep Kershaw on his normal schedule. Hill gave up just a run while whiffing six in five innings last Tuesday in San Francisco but didn’t figure into the decision as the Giants posted a 2-1 triumph. Los Angeles hitters have supplied Hill with just five runs of support in three starts as he prepares to face the Cardinals for the first time since he was with the Cubs in 2008.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

There aren’t any pronounced trends so far in 2017 for tonight’s plate umpire Rob Drake. The Pennsylvania native has called balls and strikes eight times with totals running 4-3-1 (O/U/P) and the home-road winner an even 4-4. Drake worked a couple of games at Chavez Ravine in 2016, the Dodgers winning both times and totals halving.

It’s going to be a bit humid by LA standards, but otherwise a great night for baseball in Los Angeles with temps in the mid-60s, clear skies and just a zephyr of a breeze from the SW (out to right). I’m going ‘under’ with my free baseball pick, which means you probably should go ‘over.’

Free MLB Pick: 'Under' 7.5 (+100)Best Line Offered: 5Dimes
